What is this movie about?

This is one of my favorite movies. I think there's a deeper message than just the intersecting lives of several strangers. I believe that each one represents a certain ideology in the world, and deals with the apparently random events that shape their lives.

Jamie Kennedy's character is easy - Calvinism, the belief that everyone's afterlife is determined at birth

John Carroll Lynch's character might be buddist, i'm unsure. He values every single life, even that of a bug. However, his character is a bit more complicated.
He does all he can to help those in distress, but in each instance is rewarded with nothing but trouble and pain. I am sure there is significance in this, but I'm not sure exactly what.

The rest are a bit more difficult, I'd love to hear people's ideas!

It's a cynical look at Buddhism in iteself though.

the teachings are that you take the pain upon yourself and always strive to do good deeds, no matter the consequences.
