Custer was a pussy

That line made me laugh out loud right after such a somber sequence of scenes

ANY scene with Sam Elliott makes me laugh out loud! Ever see him in Roadhouse?

Live for nothing, or die for something, your call.

How does he die in Roadhouse but live through this???

He had a Colt 1911 in this.

Yeah, he owned this movie. My personal favourite is, "Can't take no pictures lyin' down there, sonny" as all hell kicks off around him.

That's a good'un. I liked, "If any of you sons of bitches calls me grandpa, I'll kill you."

After seeing all the posts in here saying how Elliott was great in this--
I haven't read the book nor ever knew the guy he portrayed, but...

I can tell you that:
In a normal U.S. Army combat-arms battalion, the Sergeant Major is the advocate of the enlisted men, not the hard-ass against them.
I just totally didn't believe his "don't talk to me" schtick at Ft. Benning. The Sergeant Major is supposed to work to improve morale and welfare amongst the enlisted ranks of his unit, not to intimidate them.

Personally, I think Sam Elliott is one-dimensional as a slurring-thru-stache "tough guy" and I think that poisoned his portrayal here.

You'll notice he was ass chewing the shavetail Lieutenants.
