Most subtle reference?

I did'nt notice until about the 3rd viewing that when Jake is trying to find Janey and goes to her house, when her dad is having a Nam. flashback, that there are various pies on the table with holes in.

Then when the they are under the table, there is a clear hole in a cabbage and lots of bagels under the table. WTF had Janeys dad been doing? Ha ha.

If you think the queues are long here you should see the ones at the free clinic.

It took me something like ten viewings to notice a really subtle reference to Sixteen Candles. At the party, you can see a girl whose hair is stuck in a doorway and another girl cutting it off. They're only in sight for two seconds or so and I thought that was really neat...

I am rewatching that scene but cannot spot it (not that I am accusing you of lying)

when exactly does it occur?

reply

I can't remember exactly where it happens but I noticed it too. Sometime during the party scene, it's very brief and it's on the left side of the screen. Thought that was a nice little homage.

I think it's in the Director's Cut.

The most subtle reference takes place during one of the football practice where a man in a fishing slicker is picking up garbage with a hook. It's a reference to "I Know What You Did Last Summer" and it cracked me up!

A real subtle one is during the scene where Ricky and Jake leave the prom and are running after Janie. In the background you see a building that says "Spicoli's Television Repair". In "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" Sean Penn as Spicoli says, "my old man's a television repairman, he's got this ultimate set of tools".

This thread rocks. I've never caught any of these references before, and I've watched this movie countless times and watched the commentary. Geez. You guys are awesome.

reply

wow, great catches. I didn't remember half of these references. I like when the English teacher is lecturing you can see "I don't know" written on the chalkboard in the background. Another Fast Times reference.

Also the suit that Josh Radnor (of How I Met Your Mother) is wearing at the prom is the same suit that Jim wore in American Pie. He says something like, "You'd never guess that everyone in this school is a professional dancer"

reply

Yeah when he said that line I thought of "Grease" because everyone at the prom seemed to be great dancers lol.

reply

I think it was a reference to the dance scene in She's All That too:

When Jake is singing just before prom and the Ferris wheel is behind him that IS right out of Grease

There are some really great ones. One that took me a while to hear/understand is when Ricky is trying to chase Jake to get to Janey's house. One kid rides by on a bike yells 'Two dollars!' (which is a reference to Better off Dead...), then later there's a whole bunch of them yelling it & one guy yells "Dos dolares!" (which is obviously Spanish for two dollars).

The most subtle one I picked up was in the library for 'the breakfast club' scene, if you look at the back wall there are two signs identifying the book sections 'History' and 'Weird Science'.

I thought that was pretty cool.

'I never apologize, Lisa. I'm sorry, but that's just the way I am. ' Homer Simpson

reply

I didn´t catch that one (I´m watching the movie right now), but I loved the sign under the clock in the library that read "clock is 20 minutes fast", which is something the janitor of the school tells them in "Breakfast Club" (my favorite movie). If I recall correctly there´s also a sign in the background in a cafeteria scene which says "Anthony Michael Dining Hall".

Janie's Brother and his hair changing into various 80's movie styles throughout the movie.

The 'ferris Bueller' house used for Risky Business spoof

The school in 'Buffy' used at the start and possibly throughout.

When Jake and the guy who played the Ducky character are running to go get Janey after the prom, the Ducky character runs into traffic and avoids a bunch of cars that all slam on their brakes to stop. As he starts to emerge from this, a kid on a bike rides by and runs him over and yells "Two dollars!" which is what the paperboy would yell at John Cusack while trying to collect two dollars from him in "One Crazy Summer."

reply

I thought it was interesting that the Jake and Janey characters both paid homage to Sixteen Candles characters in their initial scenes but were then parodies of She's All That characters for the rest of the movie.

The opening scene where everybody remembers Janey's birthday was a parody of everyone forgetting Samantha's birthday in Sixteen Candles.

When I first heard the name Jake Wyler I thought instantly it was a cross between Jake Ryan and Zack Siler. Although he was Zack for the most part I thought the sleek car he drove was a subtle reference to Jake's car.

In the dining hall scene there is a plate on the wall that says Anthony Michaels Dining Hall, a reference to Anthony Michael Hall of The Breakfast Club.

The John Cusack movie with the paperboy chasing him was "Better Off Dead" not i"One Crazy Summer".

MrsPrimitiveBoomstick's bit of stuff

Better Off Dead actually, but man...how great was One Crazy Summer?

"They have a grill, it's this grill. Now you have it...it's called America."

This has a LOT of VERY subtle references, which is why I find it to be the best parody.

But I will say the cafeteria scenes in which you see the name "Anthony Michael Dining Hall" is hilarious, but also quite subtle and easy to miss.

I don't feel enough for you to cry.

Oh well.

I'm surprised that nobody mentioned this, but the chef/cook telling the nerdy guy "I just jerked off in your French toast" is definitely a reference to the film Road Trip IMO.

reply

Yeah.

I love the beginning of the detention scene where the olive loaf peels off the sculpture. Clearly a spoof of the lunch scene in The Breakfast Club.

The sign that reads "Harry Dean Stadium" during the football scene - an homage to the actor Harry Dean Stanton, who played Molly Ringwald's father in Pretty In Pink.
