Americans/Brits did it too

The Americans and British also kept Germans as POWs after the war was over, when there was no justification for keeping them imprisoned. The Allies even turned German prisoners over to the Soviets. This violated the laws of the United States of America, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, and several international conventions.

German prisoners were indeed held in the UK years after the end of WW2, with the last being sent home in 1948; but many choose to settle here after their "re-education":the most well-known being Bert Trautmann who famously played on in a football match having sustained a broken neck.

And they were kept in conditions a HELL of a lot less harsh than Soviet or even French captivity.
