Why prisoners beat Forell?
I don't understand why his fellow prisoners beat Forell after he was caught trying to escape. Can someone explain?
Spoiler:
And why did the doctor kill himself?

My guess is that when a prisoner escapes, everyone in the camp is punished...so it was payback...
The doc: my guess is that he had been planning to escape (all the gear he saved up) but when instead he gave up his gear to Forell, he knew his own ambitions of escape were over.

They were forced to?
Remember a bit later, when Forell is escaping, there's a cut back to the mine. The prisoners are sorta striking. Refuse to work unless they get food, and also they refuse to beat any more of their own.
The way I saw it was that prisoners were most likely punished while he was in that hole after he was caught trying to escape. So it was revenge for that.
As for the doctor: He mentioned he had cancer, that's why he had given up all his gear to help Forell. Plus, I think he knew once they found out Forell had escaped, they probably would have tortured him.
Fellow prisoners were denied food for five days. Doctor says this after beating.
shareI thought about the same questions. My conclusions are that the guards actually forced the prisoners to beat Forell (with the threat of their own punishment if they did not) .. the 2nd time Forell escaped one of the prisoners said, "you will never make us beat a comrade again" (or something similar).
The doctor killed himself for several reasons. First, it would be obvious that he helped Forell escape which would cause him great suffering or possibly even an execution. Also, he knew he had given away his only possibility of ever getting out of there (and had asked that Forell tell his wife that he had already died so she could have some closure). Also .. he had cancer so he would not long to live in any case and decided to choose his own death.
These are the answers that make the most sense to me.
It's called "Running the Gauntlet" - an old form of punishment used because everyone had to beat at him or else they would be beaten - it creates bad comradeship
shareRemember? the doctor said when he was examining Forell after he was beaten that the workers were not given food for 5 days. So non one needs to ask them to beat him. when the workers were forced to work without any food for 5 days, they must have identified the reason and took revenge. i think anyone would have done so in such situation....
