An excellent movie

I chanced upon this movie about twenty minutes into it, started watching it and by god I was transfixed by the story and would recommend anyone who is interested in World War II or a very good movie to watch this film.

The other good thing is that it is in subtitles and there is no stupid dubbing so people have to read. Hate it when people say that subtitles are stupid and they hate films with them.

For those who say this "GROW UP" and enjoy the film for the story rather than the way it is presented.

Very good movie indeed. I strumbled by it while looking for some german movies at hastings. the subtitles are something you get used to, and dont even notice anymore after about 20 minutes. Excellent story line, outstanding actors, and awesome locations. this movie will really suck you in and keep your attention to the last moment. a lot more foreign films should be made to that standard

Ditto everything you say. I was supposed to be at work but ended up in bed with bad cold...don't know why I had MOVIES4MEN channel on - but this was on and just WOW!!! What a film and story. Yes it's made for TV but I thoroughly enjoyed everything about this film. I'd rather watch this again than some popcorn Holywood blockbuster. Just WOW. Need to find the book now and read it but even if it's different, I don't care, I loved this film.

Id give it a 8-9 because it had these aspects.... survival, cold landscape, father-daughter, man-dog, and so I loved it

But the movie is pretty unreal, too much of good luck, too many people helping him, the story line is more like a corny feel good christmas movie

Darkness lies an inch ahead

In the wikipedia about the real guy who "went through" all of this there are some serious doubts about the authenticity.

Doubts of the authenticity of Rost's claims

Comprehensive researches, condensed in 2010 into a three-hour radio feature by radio journalist Arthur Dittlmann for the Bayerischer Rundfunk (Bavarian Broadcasting Company),[8] left serious doubts about the authenticity of the events told in Rost's original story. For example, no prisoner of war camp existed at Cape Dezhnev in the Far East of Siberia at the time claimed in the book; Rost was not a Wehrmacht officer as depicted in the story; the German Red Cross, with headquarters in Munich, never received any inquiry about his whereabouts, which is unusual for a ten-year imprisonment; and Rost had been released from a Soviet prisoner of war camp on 28 October 1947, about two years before his alleged escape in 1949-1952, which he therefore could not have accomplished.[9] Additional errors include the main street in Moscow, along which he and his captured comrades were driven at the beginning of the novel, was named by Rost as Nevsky Prospekt, which is actually located in Saint Petersburg. As a result, Bauer, as the author of the book, is now blamed for not having critically cross-checked such unreliable details in Rost's story.[9]
