Missing 36 Minutes on U.S. DVD

While the original theatrical release of this German movie was 158 minutes, I noticed that the U.S. DVD release runs only for about 122 minutes. I wonder what scene or scenes were cut from the original. It's a shame given that DVDs are usually D9 or Dual Layered and could accomodate about 3.5 hours of good quality picture.

I saw the DVD in my German class, it was one he brought back from Germany, and then when i was there i picked up my own copy, i wasn't even aware it was out in the U.S., i invested in a region free player, plus my computer

I just saw this in the US, it was 110 minutes long and it seemed to me like some things were missing, the film was very good, but it did jump around a bit.

"Major, right now you've got me as confused as I ever hope to be."

You dont need a region free player. All DVD players have a code you can use to play any region DVDs. You just enter via the remote. They make DVD players this way to test out other coded DVDs.

Anyway this was a great movie. I caught the full version on Netflix. Fantastic and true story. As a former soldier this really got to me on an emotional level having left my son and wife behind before. As a German it is also touched me. My own Opa didn't return from Soviet captivity until 1954.

You can only change regions on a regular DVD player a few times before it locks in. This is to allow for people who move to another country, but not for people who just want to watch various international movies.

I think there must have been some sort of romance between Pyotr and a woman in the prison camp. There was some reference to it the night he escaped.

I just watched the 122 minute DVD from Netflix...Wonderful movie!...But I did get a little confused at times when suddenly there seemed that a chunk of time was missing...
When I watched the trailer afterwards I saw many scenes that hadn't been in the movie. Here are some...

(1)Forrel being sentenced to hard labor by the Russians (in the short movie he suddenly ends up on a train and you have no idea what is happening until he ends up in the camp)
(2)The Alaskan Indians carrying him to their camp on a stretcher after he had been attacked by the wolves

And a few others

Also I imagine there was some side story about his relationship with the female Siberian prison camp guard as one of the posters already mentioned

Why the heck did they cut such a wonderful movie...ridiculous!

reply

You all have seen versions, where huge chunks has been cut out.
The original DVD release in Germany is 151 minuttes long, when you don't count the end credits to the playing time.
I know they here write Stereo as soundmix, but the german DVD has 5.1 audio.

even the version on german tv is the cut version.:-)) i streamed the version on youtube who are uncut, but no sub at the same time as tv.german tv version had danish sub.so i can say the most part that was cut was the beginning before he escaped from the camp.in the cut version he escaped very short after arrival,so it seemed.lol.
