Great movie, corny ending (spoiler)

I loved the movie but was rolling my eyes at the corny ending in the church. I think it would have been more powerful if he had reunited with his family in the dark, in the snow, outside their home. Was the church reunion the way it actually happened, or was that made up for audience appeal? I haven't read the book.

While I wouldn't go so far as to call it 'corny', I do agree that the ending could have been more powerful.

Why didn't he knock on (or just enter) the door at home? Why wait for church?

reply

That's a good question ... a person in that position would not wait. More so the the daughter's ESP was also pretty corny.

Nothing that happened at the end was as corny as his seduction by the sexy Eskimo. That was like something out of a Steven Seagal movie 

Yeah, not a very well written part of the film. It's not even acted that well. Hell, if it was me, I would have been all over my family. I speak from experience having been deployed twice while I was in the U.S. Army.

Anyway, I think the film was trying to show that perhaps he was scared that they wouldn't accept him or recognize him since he had been gone for so many years. Perhaps he was terrified that his wife had moved on and wanted to make sure she hadn't.

Just a few thoughts...
