Confused about one part : how did Mathyus...

So how did Mathyus get from being a king to in the middle of the desert eating a scorpian?

I just rewatched the scorpian king and got confused about that part.

Maybe he lost his kingdom? <.<

The way I see it, they made a completely different story for him when he was given his own film - in The Mummy Returns, they needed a villain-ish guy as the background for the story in TMR, whereas in The Scorpion King, they needed a Hero.

Seriously though: a possible explanation is that enemies conquered his kingdom, killed Cassandra, and Mathayus had to - once again - fight. Perhaps this would lead to him being so desperate for victory, so desperate, in fact, that he'd be willing to sell his soul for it.

Or whatever. :p

reply

At the start he was practically dead before eating the scorpion.

I think his kingdom was conquered so he went forth to conquer other kingdom's. Unfortunately he was beaten and had to walk away.

reply

if you watch the begining of TMR you see that Mathayus is fighting the pharos armies and losses, and running away he gets in to the desert, eating a scorpion , bla bla bla. And how does a hero become a vilain is very easy, lust for power and a few victoryes ussually makes u think you are invincible and righteous.

reply

TSK is a prequel to the events of TMR.

this is exactly it...

I think it has something to do with how he was poisoned with an arrow that had scorpion venom on it. I seem to recall the sorceress saying something about "the blood of the scorpion will always flow through his veins" after she saves him, but I could be wrong.

At the end of TSK, he asks the sorceress how long the peace will last. She says something like, nothing lasts forever.

So my reasoning is that after he became The Scorpian King at the end of the movie, peace ended after a time and this leads us to the beginning of TMR. It is possible his kindom was attacked by the kingdom we see him attacking at the beginning of The Mummy Returns.

It is explained in the beginning of TMR that the Scorpian King lead a great army to conquer the known world and after 7 years of battle was defeated and drove into the desert. After wandering the desert and everyone but him dying, he makes a pact with Anubis to save his life and conquer his enemies. It doesn't really say he was evil at this point, more like desperate. Then Anubis takes his soul after his enemies are defeated. I think this is what turned him evil, after Anubis forces the Scorpian King to serve him forever.

What confuses me is that at the end of "Scorpion King", he's the ruler of Egypt, but then at the beginning of "Mummy Returns"... he's attacking Egypt (I mean the VERY beginning, before the Anubis business).

Well the third movie states he loses his kingdom to plague. So perhaps in TMR, he had aquired an army and is trying to reclaim his old kingdom.

reply

That's possible.

I wouldn't really (personally) consider anything in the third movie (or even the second film for that matter) to be considered canon. Considering the content of the movie and where the Scorpion King ends up...its very odd in relation to the prologue of the Mummy Returns. There are major contradictions to the other films.

reply

Well it does help show his evolution from the good guy to the villian (the third film that is) by making him less of a good guy. But I do think they kinda need another film to bridge the gap alittle more. He's still overall good by the end of the 3rd film.

SPOILERS for the third movie:

"Well it does help show his evolution from the good guy to the villian (the third film that is) by making him less of a good guy."

He goes through practically the same transformation...from assassin to king. If anything, by the end of the third Scorpion King...he is more humble and responsible for his people. He is farther from being the character seen in The Mummy Returns prologue. He is king of a far east Asian kingdom that is broke from prior invasions. Furthermore he has the book of the dead already (which is now required to be read using a necklace and has no key to open it). So even with the book of the dead, it still takes him "seven long years" to LOSE a fierce battle to conquer Thebes (as shown in the prologue)? With the book of the dead, he should have been able to overtake Thebes initially using Anubis's army.

The first scorpion king movie had the Rock take control over Memon's kingdom by force...most likely before he was ready to be a king. The third film has him, after dealing with a great loss, take control over a kingdom under his own choice and for the betterment of that society. It seems that the third movie takes him farther away from his darker side. He is king of a broke kingdom, focused only on defense of that kingdom (as opposed to attacking Egypt), with a book that is somehow lost and finds its way to Hamunaptra.

I 100% doubt that there is going to be another film. Based on an article I read some years ago, only one more Scorpion King film was planned. This is it. They can't go any lower budget. Besides, the first Scorpion King was MEANT to be a stand-alone film anyway.

reply

It could have been the actor or the bad dialogue, but he just seemed more dark then Rock did in the first film throughout.
