Crowe instead of Penn, really?

This is not to start any arguments, but I truly believed Sean Penn's performance on a gut level. While Russell is also a great actor I doubt something like Gladiator could have the same kind of heart. The win was likely more of a popularity contest or what the academy campaigned for.

His role really teaches a lot about parenting in terms of raising a child, in contrast to the lawyer, who barely pays attention to her son until learning from Sam. Of course, it really does take a village for any child.

But Gladiator and I Am Sam are from different years, so what is your point?

I believe the OP meant to compare Penn's performance to Crowe's in A Beautiful Mind. Both actors competed for Best Actor at the 2002 Oscars, eventually losing out to Denzel Washington in Training Day.
