What is it you didn't like about the film?

Acting? Acting was flawless.

Story? Flawless.

Camera angles, special effects? Flawless. Gunshot victims looked as real as possible.

Film? On tape, instead of 24 or 32 mm; And there is where I'm guessing your problem with the movie is.

Unless you guys are willing to give some specific examples of what sucked about the movie, I'm only to assume that you guys have been spoiled with all of the special effects and state of the art technology mainstream hollywood as showered you with. I'm surprised you even took the initiative to rent a movie shot on video tape. You must have grabbed it on accident while reaching for Lord of the Dorks, WideScreen Edition.

Maybe I'm a bit biased because I worked with this film's music supervisor, but I think this movie is excellent though a bit overrated. The story is extremely cliched (i.e. making crack, doing drive-bys, all the things you expect in 'gangsta movies'); I doubt Adam Ripp has much of a career in the industry judging by the screenplay he wrote. It's really his cast - the real-life gang members - who carry this film. They're the ones who give this film its claim to realism. At least it's not "Hollywoodized" in any way (i.e. having Crips and Bloods dressing head-to-toe in all blue/red a la "Colors"), but it doesn't have too much depth. "Gang Tapes" is refreshing though not as good as it might have been in the hands of a better director/screenwriter.

This film is wack n***a!

How is Darris Love, of City Guys, and Alex Mack fame, a "real" gang member? He's been acting since he was a kid. While there were some real gang members, and the film used mostly unknown actors, it is wrong to claim that real gang members made up this entire cast. Real Los Angeles natives, yes. But they're not all gang members.

reply

I can't agree that it was cliche. Maybe if
it were a song, but not in a flick.

The cliche I've always seen on movies were
where the black gang bangin lead characters
are somehow being "good guys" because
- a pack of corny corrupt cops are always
bustin their chops, or
~ a more evil opposing gang feuds with them
over a drug deal/money heist gone wrong or
~ cuz our "hero" stole a bunch of money or
dope from this gang & the whole movie is "Dang!
we gotta find a way to beat these guys who
outgun/outnumber us" and then they do.

I haven't seen characters like this leading
a movie, they're always the remourseless
bad guy sub-characters that get killed or
arrested in cop movies. I wanna see more like
this.

"I think this movie is excellent though a bit overrated."

IMDB seems to dislike it and I haven't really heard much feedback from anywhere else so where is it overrated? Just curious.

The OP is a total moron.

LOL @ "24 or 32mm". Those are even motion picture film gauges. At least try to know what you're talking about if you're going to attempt to insult someone's taste.
And Gang Tapes sucks. I normally enjoy movies of this type, but this was really bad. I'd rather watch Now Eat than this pile of *beep*

reply

I agree, this movie was awesome.
Sure maybe it didn't have all the special effects of the other movies but that's not what the movie was about. It's trying to show you actually what it's like in the hood and being a gangster.

You people saying it sucks are idiots.
Have a good day.

reply

So many judge films based on their dislike of what is being portrayed, vs the talent that went into that portrayal. was it more realistic than Blair Witch?

reply

I have an extensive collection of gangster films, and I must say, after watching "Gang Tapes" today it is definitely one of my favorites. The *beep* is real in that movie, you can't act lot of that *beep* out without experiencing it. They did a great job with this film.

reply

This film sucks!!! watched it with a couple of m8s and we thought it was a joke! we thought for the first 10 mins it would cut and the proper film would start. Anyone who thinks this film is good is either stupid or have no idea!

reply

It was full of cliches, both of the 'gangsta' lifestyle and black America in general, but it was flawlessly acted and quite well done for the most part. I really enjoyed watching it.

reply

I enjoyed this movie. What makes us so stupid for liking this film? The whole idea of this movie is great.Sure, its typical but its realistic and different from every other "gang" movie you see. Of course the acting isnt going to be top notch because most characters from this movie have never acted before in their life. The majority of the characters you see in this film are gang members from the LA area so its more realistic because everything they do,from the way they act to the way they talk, is what they've learned from the streets.

It isnt the greatest movie I've seen, but,it isnt the worst.

I'm 14 and I thought it was good :P Well yeah the person who posted this was a troll so we shoulda just ignored this dude.

I agree. This movie is a big, steaming pile of excrement. So terribly acted, horribly filmed, and awful writing. Let us hope the writer/director leave the film biz to the pros.

I only wish every character in the film would get shot in a mass drive-by.

(I'm going to spell, with ghetto words)

Cleshay?

This movie isn't cleshay.

I'd like to bring up evidence called "MEGAPARAHNA" and "LIGHTNIGHT: BOLTS OF DESTRUCTION" or "SHARKNIGHT 3D".

The guys in this movie didn't act goofily.

They didn't react slow to the words.

Or get angry at an incorrect pace.

Or start shaking their heads a lot, Or act unextreme with the dramatics "nnnooooooooo (looks around and says Uhhhh oh yeah, really quietly) watch outtttttttt...."(no exclamation point!...cause they didn't match the tempo, like no stop, don't, drop that remote control).

Those cleshay, responses that are known to be known for years, since it's the common, common crappy trait that ruins movies. Kind of dwarfs common scenes and action and plot points these days.

After seeing all the other hood movie I got hold of this and first I started watching one night but turened it off as I didnt want to have to watch a cheap ass video camera movie. But tonight I thought I would try it again and it turned out to be pretty good. It was pretty realistic, the actors seemed very real as if they are really hood and afew could even rap well. I guess the fact that it lacked a good guy/bad guy, happy ending or over the top moral questioning from the characters. Theres enough moral points in it though to say that it isnt glamourising gang life (ok maybe it is abit if your a 14 boy, but an adult would realise that the life was terrible).

I wonder how much, with the popularity of cell phones and devices that can record video, of gang life gets recorded like this these days?. 7 out of 10, but not an enjoyable film as such, more an educational film.
