real recomendations!!

if you liked this film you might also enjoy "tetsuo 1" For all the raw power. and if you liked tetsuo you might also like david cronemburgs "ERASERHEAD"

OTHER films you could like would be

ICHI THE KILLER (PLAYED BY ASANO FROM ELECTRIC DRAGON)
and i suppose any other superhero film becuase this is what this film is, A superhero film!

Eraserhead is from David Lynch. From Cronenberg Videodrome and Scanners are very recommendable.

Tetsuo will be the closest that you can find to this film, both in black and white and both with characters with strange powers. Even in that aspect i wouldn´t call ED8V just a superheroe film, it´s a mix of many things, from manga, videogames, cyber punk and so on.

GUITAR!!!

I'd recommend "Dead Man" because Electric Dragon reminded me a lot of it, although they are totally different movies. But if you liked the black-and-white-style and the unusual use of the guitar...

Asano played Kakihara in "Ichi the Killer", Ichi was played by a different actor.

I also recommend "Love God" - an amazing crazy piece of art.

The anime FLCL. It has crazy characters, insane style and features an alien girl with a chainsaw-powered Rickenbacker base guitar. What more could you ask for? ^^

reply

Good recomendations but I can't believe some numbnuts said Eraserhead was directed by Cronenberg.

Definitely check out Rubber's Lover and 964 Pinnochio for more cyberpunk goodness.

I've seen most of the films recommended in this thread. I'm a fan of strange journies into other people's minds. Its nice to see new and original things and what's wrong with an hour of guitar and electircity and fighting? Nothing.

I have to say though I felt a bit let down by Electric Dragon. I had no expectations when watching it, in fact I only found out about it a few days before seeing it. From the start of the movie I felt it might have had potential to be a bit special.

For what it was I guess it was very amusing. As was mentioned earlier in the thread the manga influences and godzilla like monster fighting so inherent to japan were very strong. It was a fast and fuelled ride into a strange high voltage world and was an interesting view.

I don't know what but something inside tells me this was a concept that could have gone much further. I just felt it was a little self indulgent of Ishii to knock out this dream like short so furiously. I know Ishii was just having fun here and maybe its me being a bit too cynical but I found the film a little, yes just a little pretentious. I accept they were two very cool badass mofo characters and I enjoyed them a lot but why he didnt do more with them I don't know.

I'm not looking for a nicely crafted script and special effects before I get slated for these comments I merely think that such a fantastic idea should have had more done with it. Who knows, maybe I am wrong and if it had been developed further it would have lost its intensity, charm and humour. Just my gut reaction to the first viewing. Will see how I feel after watching it a few more times.

964 pinnochio is better than any other film mentioned on here.

Anime called Dead Leaves and a flick called Wild Zero (mostly because of guitar wolf but its still a pretty mental film).

After reading several of the recommendations I feel that http://www.cyberpunkreview.com/ deserves a mention... it's not a movie in itself, but it is a site dedicated to cyberpunk movies from all over the world;)

"Tuvalu"--French b/w apoco-fantasy with little dialogue. "Le Dernier Combat" an early Luc Besson film--also little/no dialogue, but very Heavy Metal magazine-like. "The Sore Losers" by J Michael McCarthy--a little garagey/low budget but once you make sense of it you'll watch it repeatedly and buy the soundtrack (some of my favorite bands). "The American Astronaut" and "Stingray Sam" by Cory Mcabee. "Wild Zero" with Guitar Wolf! "Cutie Honey". "Dead Leaves" a raucous animation (not anime) from Jaipan. "Versus"(2000) also from the islands.

Hope this gets picked up again.
