should I watch this ??

never seen it.

It depends on the kind of films you like. This is a brilliant, well written film - but it is based on a stage play, and is presented that way. It's a lengthy movie, and takes time to develop its characters. It was worth it in the end for me.

reply

thank you

reply

I liked the movie, but I am not sure I would recommend it to people. It moves slowly and the ending is really disturbing.

reply

sounds intriguing - thanks

reply

I would highly recommend it. It's probably my favorite Lars von Trier film. This is probably also my favorite performance from Nicole Kidman. All around great cast. John Hurt's narration is the icing on the cake.

reply

thanks

reply

I have to see this

reply

That's been 4 months now!

It's alright I suppose. A bit odd but not bad at all.

reply

it is on my list

The Tim Curry version or the new one?

I prefer the Tim Curry one personally.

reply

Yes, immediately.

reply

Did you finally see it hownos? It’s one of my all-time favourites and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

reply

he is not replying for some reason

reply

i have not

reply

Why are you always coming here asking people "Should I watch this?" (I knew the culprit must be hownos as soon as I saw the thread title) if you don't actually take anybody's advice?

reply

i do actually. many times.

reply

Then have you finally seen Dogville three years later?

reply

this is one i started to watch and didn't like it.

reply

It might not be your cup of tea, but it takes its time and gradually builds over its 3 hours to a rather powerful finale. It bowled me over the first time I saw it.

reply

It is one of the most fcked up movies I have ever seen. Would not recommend. And I love Lars von trier

reply

There’s a surprise 🙄

reply

Why Tim? What's your opinion on dogville or Lars?

reply

I think it’s a remarkable film. Completely original, utterly shocking, and magnificently staged. As a political statement I think it’s the most raw and unashamed critique of how Americans treat foreigners with mistrust and cruelty. The performances are uniformly excellent and Nicole Kidman gives an uncharacteristically subdued and devastating performance, the strongest of her career so far. And Lauren fucking Bacall, I mean, c’mon!! The juxtaposition of the bare stage and breathtaking CGI is inspired. Yeah, you could say I rate it as a masterpiece.

As for Lars, I usually find him a little heavy-handed as a director but with Dogville he was note perfect.

reply

You made some good points and I agree here, I guess I was way too triggered by the abuse scenes, those overshadowed the whole other settings and themes for me.

reply

I can understand that. They are harrowing. As are Grace’s instructions at the end of the movie. I literally get shivers thinking about it. Very few movies have had that lasting impact on me. That’s how I know it’s special.
