<grin> You're very welcome.

Re "pedantic"... Someone in another thread tried to call me out for using the word to describe Von Trier and Dogville, insinuating that I was being pretentious or worse and that I had no idea what the word actually means. I believe this person is one of the Von Trier blind minions, who simply cannot see that he is very capable of making a sucky film. Perhaps I should have used "sucky" instead.

Anyway, enough of my mini-rant...have a nice holiday!!!

Hi elacm, I actually didn't like this flick at all - as you've probably already surmised - but I gave it a 3 because I like the cast and because given different circumstances, the story could be intriguing for me. Try to bear in mind that the boards ARE for opinions and discussions. No one is giving out single stars simply because others love a film.

Unless of course they're a teen boy that voted 1 star for Sex and the City out of anger because it took away some of the Indiana Jones thunder. That's what should get you irritated. trolls definitely waste time, but who cares how I feel about a movie? You liked it, I hated it and we discuss.

But "fabulous"? Really? Huh.

"realistic"
"society real representation"

Sorry, this is a "masterpiece" so I can not use just one word.

(By the way, all above was ironic).

Miraculous!

It's the best movie I've ever seen. And I've seen so many movies... It's the perfect analysis and description of the human being. You can read so many messages in it...
Thank you very much, Lars Von Trier!
And sorry, B-J-C, for having used so many words... but it's the least I can say about this absolute work of art!!!

"Grace paused. And while she did, the clouds scattered and let the moonlight through. And Dogville underwent another of those little changes of light..."

Provoking

I think any film of this nature, be it different, thoughtful and daring will provoke vastly contrasting opinions.

reply

Miserable

Dialectic... negative dialectic though, in contras to many other protestant scandinavian works

I can't think of one single word that sums up this movie, but I can think of two:

Deeply unsettling (especially the ending)

So this is how liberty dies-with thunderous applause?

reply

Honest.

reply

Pretentious

reply

brutal

reply

i'm sorry but i have to use two... i'll put one in brackets tho!

(disturbingly) cathartic.

reply

really weird

reply

I'd say Provocative.

Otherwise I think it depends on witch angle you're looking at it from...

It's *Frightning* - how true it is.

It's *Disturbing* - how well you can see traits of yourself in some of the actions.

It's *Brave* - how you as a viewer is trusted to watch it without "the big budget".

It's *Excellent* - every actor in it is just that (Nicole is radiating imho).

It's *Horrofying* - well, the plot simply is.

It's *Fun* - to see such a theatrical stage in a feature film.

In short I call it a Masterpiece. Didn't like Von Trier much before, and can't say I ever liked him much again - but with this - he did very well!

Garbage

reply

I agree, as do my kids. It was garbage. My wife is not allowed to pick movies on her own anymore since renting this one.

reply

Wow. So because kids didn't like it, you think it was bad. This film relies on imagination. Obviously you and your kids have none.

reply

For your beautiful family, there are so many wonderful movies... "Rumor Has It..." by Rob Reiner could be one of those! And for your kids, there are movies like "Inspector Gadget". Watch these, I'm sure you'll love them!

Cinema is not for you, change your passion and devote yourself to sport!!!;-)

Lars von Trier and Nicole Kidman... the perfect film couple!
Of course, Bjork is also excellent...

Oh yes. Curse you for not enjoying one movie! You apparently should have your eyes scratched out and such! Damn you indeed!

"My wife is not allowed to pick movies on her own anymore since renting this one."

Sounds like your wife is playing Grace to your every other person in the town. I find it hilarious that you reject this film, when it seems so true to your person, perhaps this is the reason for your rejection. One question: What are you gonna do if your wife goes and rents a movie behind your back? Chain her to a heavy wheel and force her to pick your gooseberry bushes?

Irony is awesome, isn't it?

reply

You are right! There r so many great movies to watch like Alladin, Little Mermaid and Hercules...I can imagine u and your kids eating a pack of happy tarts and cheering every two minutes!Yeah thats something worth to watch!!!You so stupid and miserable man Im sorry for your wife

reply

Probably, your kids didn't understand the movie's message. How can you even think that. I would say that this movie is more like a theatre, as "I, Claudius" (and notice the narrator :)).

reply

you watched it with your kids?!?! Ahahaha I sure hope they're not traumatized for life

oh and, I gotta go with 'provocative'

reply

I agree, as do my kids. It was garbage. My wife is not allowed to pick movies on her own anymore since renting this one.

That's really quite a funny tongue-in-cheek quip.

*CHALLENGING*

IT SHOWS WHAT ALL THOSE SO-CALLED "GOOD PEOPLE" ARE CAPABLE TO MAKE TO YOU IF YOU -WELL INTENTIONED- GIVE THEM A HAMMER TO SMASH YOUR SCULL

I was expecting a little piece of moral crap when I went to the theater to watch this movie but it turned out to be really brilliant.

Compelling.

Although, I could only watch it once. But I was drawn into it, then the second time, I was so bored, but regardless, it's great.

reply

Satisfying.

Ultimately its a revenge flick IMO, Grace gets banged until Act 9 where she gets her revenge and everyone in the town dies.
