Did the ending make anyone else happy? Spoilers!

Usually seeing a town go up in flames and families being executed make for a sad image but damn, I was sure happy to see it happen. I LOVE THIS ENDING! Only criticism I had was the overuse of narration. For instances, Grace's big speech to the town would of been nice to hear; I just wanted to hear what she had to say to them.

Oh without a doubt I was in a state of cathartic, savouring ecstacy, killing Tom herself was just the cherry on the cake. I was so hungry for revenge.

The ironic part of it is that Thomas lied to her, she warned him not to call the boss.... and she STILL needed the time to think about what had to be done with those basically evil people (yes, even the kids who thought her being raped was funny so they rang the bell extra times).

The ending was kind of perfect. I recall a conversation from the book that I've read, it fits here. I hope it doesn't lose in translation:

- Are you capable of forgiveness?
- I've already forgiven
- Not until you have satiated your demand for revenge
- Yes
- Any regrets?
- No

It was kind of carthartic to see those horrid town/folk murdered and burn't for their rape/victimisation and blackmailing of Grace. But murder...? Not only of the perps but of small children and a baby!
That was too much?

reply

I thought the baby was a bit much too.

I was right with it up until that point.

I mean what was the baby guilty of? Being born to the wrong family?

Obviously there might be the fear that he would grow up to seek revenge or something like that if he ever found out but you could just put him up for adoption or at the very least have him work as part of 'the family'.

I think at this point Grace had viewed the town and it's people as a disease that needed to be completely eradicated but again I thought the baby was a bit much. He was still young enough to modify his behavior.

Well at least the dog was spared

~What if this is as good as it gets?!~

I laughed, a few times. Once when I got a feeling that Grace had something cool in store for them. And again when I saw what it was. Loved it! The whole film, really.

This is my siggy. It appears, automagically, when I post.

So many times I walk away from a films ending scratching my head or being mildly to hugely disappointed. This was not one of those times. Dogville, you got your just desserts.

reply

yes... it does makes me happy.

It's simply the most gratifying end to a movie I've ever seen. Not necessarily the best, per se, but definitely the most gratifying!!

re: The baby should have been spared. And either raised by Grace or given to a family with better morals to be raised proper.

I agree. But maybe Grace felt the town needed to be "cleansed" of ALL its so-called people. She spared the dog, at least.

Tom in some ways was the worst of them, as he talked in terms of "lofty" ideals/concepts but ultimately his main (if not only) concern was himself.

Loved it. Grace got her revenge and no one deserved to pay more than that town.
