Story?!

All the great photography is wasted without a story. This should further prove that comics should stay comics.

All the great words are wasted in a comment based on lack of knowledge. This should further prove that some people should keep their opinions to themselves.

All the points are valid. The story was light and largely incomprehensible, and bizarre to boot for most audiences. But the moviemaking is of such high caliber and imagination that the work more than stands on itself.

Think of it as a piece of art rather than a movie designed to give you what you want how you want it. Its astonishing that award awarders wouldn't notice something this dedicated for picture and audio considerations, both outstanding.

What's not to get about the story? The storyline in the real world is pretty simple (bad guys trying to steal gold from Indians, good guy trying to protect the native's land. Plus a tragic death in the beginning and the crucial love story).
The other parts of the movie show Blueberry's inside, the ghosts of the past that haunt him, and so on. And then there's the spiritual level, the world referred to as "welcome to the other world" which is the world that only the Indians know about - except Wally, who tries to own the spiritual world for his own bad purposes and must be defeated by Blueberry.

Plain and simple - though maybe not if you never heard about the spiritual level and never cared to go there.
