the ending

***SPOILER***

I am unsure if they committed suicide at the end. I did not see a rope but they were jumping from a bungee platform. I would really appriciate any input. Thank you.

It's sad that there is only one post on the board for this beautiful movie. And that I'm the only one replying. Such a great movie, too bad more people don't give it a chance.

As for your question, I believe they do commit suicide. I didn't see the rope either and if you look at the bridge after they jump, you see people running over to the edge yelling. I figure that they are freaking out because two people just killed themselves. Also, at the end, they are talking about what they will be reborn as.

I was in awe when I saw this movie, I hope more people see it.

Does anyone know how popular it was in Korea and the Asian market? I would love to see the DVD get released in the US, because I want a copy of it.

I think it was pretty clear they committed suicide. A central theme in the movie is that when you "jump off" you don't die, you just "go on." They jumped off the bridge to get another chance at being reborn.

Also earlier in the movie, during the first scene of the couple on the small cliff, they joked that they would die together.

I loved the movie. It's the best I've seen since "The Classic."

If I'm not mistaken it was a number one box office smash in Korea, and you can get the DVD on yesasia.com -- sadly, the actress, Lee Eun-ju, has committed suicide, and I think they're re-releasing all her films to commemorate her. If not, try eBay. I got a Hong Kong version on eBay for about $10, but I'm not pleased with the subtitles.

I asked some korean friends and they said it was a real hit.

yes i think they bungee jumped without a rope. that's what i think the title's all about. i even rewound to the ending just to see it again. and i think they wanted to be reborn again. great movie! grows on you.

a few years late i finally watched this movie, i've had it with me for a while, but never got around to watching it.

I finally watched it yesterday, and was deeply touched by this movie - i asked my wife (who's Korean), why are Korean movies so sad, and she told me Korean culture is deeply rooted in various cultural tragedies.

I really enjoyed this movie, particularly how they approached the 'one love' through reincarnation was very interesting.

It's even sadder, since the wonderful actress in this movie, and also so many other previous great movies, she herself committed suicide last year.

Holly! My post is way way too late. I didn't know this movie was made in 2001.

My interest in Korean movies has grown since my very first Korean movie encounter with Oldboy. I found a Korean movie rental place near my place and went there yesterday. The owner lady was very informative. She recommended this oddly titled movie along with some other movies. Bunge Jumping of their own? How odd, I thought. Then I started to watch it. I was disappointed when I saw the beginning because I didn't want the regular romance movie. Well, this was of course a love story but interesting with reincarnation idea woven into it. Then I thought, my, another gay movie. . . but, boy, I was wrong. It has nothing to do with the theme of homosexuality. I explained it to my buddy. . . "hey, this woman dies and comes back to love this guy again. But she's "he" in this life. The guy and the boy (reincarnated woman) recognize each other but both of them are not gay. To make things even more complicated, the reiincarnated woman's soul is in 17 year old boy and the other guy's his teacher and that got him fired . ." My friend's like, uh, what? So, I gave up and lend him the DVD instead.

I don't think I'll watch it again, but thanks for the ending talks. I was wondering about that too. And the actress killed herself for real? Geez. . .

It was true indeed...they committed suicide!!!!
the movie was great i think. i watched it twice, first when i was 17 (2001), i didn't like it. i think it was just another sad korean movie, with cliche ending, but then i re-watch it a few months ago... and suddenly i can feel the soul. i just didn't understand how come an adult fell in love with a 17 year-old boy, even if he had much resembles to his late girl. but then i realize... that's the beauty of one love... the beauty of fighting for what u believe... awesome.
but.... just today i watch Byung-Hun's other movie...Addicted... and that's even better... and sad...

reply

Yes they do commit sudicide cause you hear them talking about who they will reincarnate into after the jump.

reply

Its obvious that they commit suicide at least for me. No rope, the crying people, the talk after the jump. They will meet again, thats destiny, as mentioned in the movie.

I really love this movie and think its one of the best in its genre right after Christmas in August. Personally i dont believe in reincarnation but after that movie i could think of it.

reply

Yes, I agree - one of the best! Christmas In August is THE masterpiece of romantic films, but this was also subtle, beautiful, and very original.
