it was some random German destroyer?

i think it'd be funny if whoever was attacking them while they were submerged was also the ship that rescued them in the end

it would make for a double-whammy

but why didn't they just launch a torpedo against them? i mean, they are in a sub

They didnt attack the destroyer, cuz a 5 knot submerged sub going against a 30-40 knot destroyer is plain suicide. In the 40's, it wasn't as easy as "just launch a torpedo against them", as it took careful aiming, and good conditions to hit anything. But thats another story :)
