Its R because of Violence. My mom likes submarine movies, but nothing really graphic.

It's really not. Couple of shots of dead faces with some blood, nothing gorier than that (no brains or anything), couple of shots of blood in the water... really nothing, especially as compared to most films today. It's all about suggestion rather than outright gore, which is very much to my preference.
