That final shot (possible spoiler)

In that final shot, we see the sub hit the bottom along side a large ship painted with hopital coloring -- all white, with a red stripe along the side and a red cross shape. The ship doesn't look like a military ship, but rather, a civilian ship seized for the war effort. Anybody know anything?

SPOILERS. BIG NASTY HAIRY ONES

Its *quite* relevent to the plot.

You know when they think they torpedo a German ship?

But its not

and a 'character' gets killed?

It has something to do with that.

I think it was a British hospital ship, but yeah.

Ha ha, how is it even possible to miss that part of the plot? Perhaps you shouldn't be watching movies in the middle of the night. =)

1 thing tho - the ship was painted white with a giant red cross on it. Contrary to movies most subs in ww2 surfaced or ran right under to fire torpedoes, for better visibility/target id specifically to avoid the kind of horrible mistake of firing on a friendly and/or civilian ship. I realize they might not have surfaced at all and just gone by the sonar signature for target id, but then why would they belabor the point of the silhouettes of the hospital ship & German warship being alike? That heavily implies the ship was visually ided - which begs the point of how could any1 miss the ship being completely painted white, as well as the giant red cross? Does the movie specifically explain how the hospital ship was targeted, & any plausible explanation how the white paint & red cross were overlooked?
