I love this film - I wonder if it was influenced by One Step Beyond

Below is one of my favorite films, so this is not to take away from it in any way. I have been watching episodes of an old TV series from 1959 that was sort of a lesser known Twilight Zone, but with true stories.

I just watched episode 17 "The Haunted U-Boat" and while the concept was much simpler and shorter (the program is only 25 minutes) it reminded me of Below in some ways. I wondered if the director had seen this episode and got some inspiration from it.

In case anyone hasn't yet seen Below I will spoiler font this episode summary:

In the final month of World War II a German U-boat is apparently haunted by a loud banging which only occurs when it is submerged. The banging begins right after they pick up one Herr Bautmann, a high-ranking Nazi and close confidante of Hitler's who was likely responsible for countless deaths. As in Below, the haunting seems to be projected from Bautmann's subconscious guilt. The banging only occurs when Bautmann is awake and conscious. When he is asleep or knocked out the sound goes away (they end up drugging him because he starts to flip out and threaten them.)

As Bautmann wakes up and runs up to the bridge to say he is, "Suffocating and must surface," the captain receives a telegram that Hitler is dead and the war is over. Bautmann is out of his mind so he tells them the telegram is a lie and they are Germany's final hope and must fight on. When the crew spots an enemy destroyer approaching on the surface, the captain decides he would rather surface and surrender than have them die down with Bautmann and the horrible banging which he now knows comes from Bautmann's conscience.

We are told in an epilogue that later they found the skeleton of a worker who died in a chamber between the outer hull and inner submarine during its construction. The skeleton was still holding a giant wrench that could have been used to make the banging noise.

I also absolutely love this film. It's just amazing to me that so few people know about it when I consider it a classic. It is gripping and eerie from start to finish. I can never resist watching the whole thing when it comes on television.
