What was Claire's purpose?

Why was Claire in the movie except to spell out to the viewers what was going on? Because without her snooping how could we have known what Brice and the others had done, right? And of course she was the only one that could speak up when the rest of the men were quivering, coward, subordinates Her role was so pointless and the moment she entered the submarine I thought, well she's going to survive if no one else does. Heck, someone may even sacrifice himself for her.

She exists to spell things out to the audience, like you said. Also she exists for the female viewers, like me, to have a empty shell of a character to project themselves onto. She was overly dramatic, superstitious, and snoopy, but that's a basic bitch for ya.
I would brave ghosts and Nazis to be the only action around in that sub, she didn't really use her time wisely. ;p

She speaks for the dead.

It is her ship and her patients that got killed by them. They feel ashamed because of her and because she is there the ghost of the captain can't rest.

Oddly there's not much of a romance between her and Odell if I remember.
