'Where's the phone?' No mobiles in 2002?

Will walks into Marcus's mum's flat after the picnic to find her having tried to top herself.

Will asks Marcus where the 'phone is. Normanl enough, except that a single rich guy into his materialism should have owned a mobile/cell 'phone- it was 2002??

He suddenly has one in the hairdressers though?

reply

I don't carry mine with me morning, noon and night.

All the women I've ever known have/do, and many male friends too?

Someone as materialistic as Grant's character probably might do, given the women he was dating and conning. Especially on a day out- part of one's clothing?

He probably left it in the car.

Well, if the movie came out in 2002, it was probably made in 2001. The book that the movie is based on would have been published even earlier.

There were still plenty of people who didn't have mobiles in the late 1990s. 2000-2001 was probably the tipping point when you started to expect people to have mobiles.

Actually, I stayed in London for about 2 weeks in '99 and I remember seeing many people with mobile phones then. I remember clearly because I was thinking to myself, "Wow, not that many people have them back home." And I was living in NYC at the time. Although, I hardly find it bothersome enough to devote a whole thread to it.
