rap instead of grunge? ridiculous hahaha

I just read in the trivia that in the novel the artist that Will introduces to Marcus is "Nirvana". not a *beep* rap artist. sad that Hollywood and MTV tried their best to make the rap music dominant. as you can see the consequence of this action was bunch of *beep* up kids (like justin bieber) with void minds.
the funny thing is that the same people who supported rap and hip hop culture are the ones who can't stop nagging about the current generation. they keep nagging about how *beep* up our generation has become while they have invented the *beep* themselves.

rap music is nothing but a piece of crap.

End of story

If I'm not completely mistaken (it's been a while since I've read the novel) in the novel it was Ellie who introduces Marcus to Nirvana, not Will. Ellie plays a much bigger role in the novel anyway. Plus the story takes places right around Kurt Cobain's suicide in 1994. In fact, the title "About a Boy" comes from a Nirvana song named "About a Girl". They couldn't or wouldn't use that topic in a 2002 movie any more.

As it happens so often, the story from the book was simplyfied and altered. So using another kind of music which fitted into the time frame was justified I guess. Plus rap music isn't presented as anything positive in the movie. I mean Marcus singing along to sex based lyrics is rather ridiculous, if not disturbing.

I agree, and it was probably difficult to get the rites to Nirvana's music, since music artists are picky about that stuff. Courtney still owned some of the rites to Nirvana's music then, also I think.

Yes the rap angle sucks. Comes off as utterly not believable. They should've either had Marcus get into Nirvana (like the book) or, since he's in London, had him get into Oasis or Britpop in general.

This is a kid circa 2002. I really don't see what's so unbelievable about him listening to rap. And I mean, let's not pretend grunge music is all that good either. If we're being honest.
