I went through the movie totally thinking that Jian actually stole the bike. But then I looked through it again and noticed that Jian is never shown stealing the bike, and he doesn't ever own up to it, either. So, did he steal the money his dad hid and buy the bike second-hand like he said he did? If that's true, I'd feel a little less angry with him....
What do you think?
Wasn't it explained that Jian stole money from his family (originally meant for his sister's education) in order to purchase the bike? My take: he did not steal the bike, someone else stole it and sold it to him second hand.
shareIn the back of the dvd book cover, it says that Jian had bought it from a flea market, even though they haven't really mentioned anything about that in the movie (maybe a little when they're at a standoff at the bike park). I agree with shadow's theory that he stole the money to get the bike and did not steal the actual bike. Regardless... the way he's behaved towards the girl and toward his family... it makes me no less angry at that kid.
shareNo, watch the movie. He didnt steal the bike. He probably bought it from someone who stole it. He stole the money from his father to pay for the bike, so he obviously didnt steal it. His friends even gave him some extra money to repair the seat and spokes that I guess who ever stole the bike stripped off.

I think it was a little ambiguous in the movie about whether he actually stole the bike or not. I think that was deliberate on the part of the director, because it makes you wonder. Did he blow the money in arcades and things with his friends? Did he steal the bike?
I don't think he stole it either, Guai was in a pretty remote part of Beijing when his bike went missing initially, which means it's unlikely that Jian stole it. But I think that was left for the viewer to decide.
