The ending of the film

What on earth happened at the end of the film. I undersatnd that Veronica stabbed Matt and got Dr Reed round to stitch the wound. Then Veronica went to make some tea while Dr Reed gave Matt an overdose for not signing the paintings. She then told Veronica that she had killed Matt - he died from septocaemia. They then dump his body in the lake. But how did Mr Stubbs end up dead???

I know what you mean, but from the film it looks like Stubbs was the one who took the body to the lake and as he was dumping it, Matt came around. Stubbs tried to drown Matt and so Matt drown Stubbs instead, Matt tells Louise that it was self defence as it was "me or him".

SPOILER

Did you see the ending of this movie because i would say it looks like Louise gets stabbed by Matt. However, as you never actually saw the stabbing or heard a scream its possible that he didn't. Although it was heavily set up to suggest that he was going to kill her to stop her going to the police, and telling them he was still alive. The thing is i don't really see why. It was simply a case of self defence, Dr Reed had already admitted a overdoce etc and so it would be highly unlikely that Matt would be charged. The only reason i can see is that he didn't want to take that chance, but again this would mean he would need to sacrifice his art which all through the film was such a big deal...i'm just not sure they thought things through.

I agree with the events mentioned above regarding Stubbs. But I also think that he killed Louise because she would have exposed him as still alive. If everyone continued to think he was dead then he could be free to do whatever he wanted with his life (learn to paint with his feet perhaps?!) without having to sacrifice for the school and live with the added bonus of his wife being kept in jail for his murder.

Evil!!

When I wrote Out of Bounds I deliberately left certain things a bit vague to encourage discussion. So, I'm delighted that the film has intrigued you enough to want to work out exactly what happened at the end.

****WARNING! WARNING! WARNING! SPOILER**** VERY BIG SPOILER!!!

Matt, the art teacher and husband of the headmistress, faints when he sees his own blood, established when Matt cuts his thumb with his sheath knife. During the fight with Veronica, she stabs his painting hand and he falls unconscious. Veronica calls Doctor Reed who stitches Matt's hand, which is very badly injured. When Veronica is out of the room, Reed injects Matt with a powerful sedative and tells Veronica that he has died from septicaemia. Stubbs, the handyman, takes the body to the lake intending to weigh it down with Matt's own weights from the gym. But the freezing water brings Matt out of his drugged stupor and in trying to save his own life he kills Stubbs and leaves Stubbs' body weighted down at the bottom of the lake.

The reason why Dr Reed wanted Matt dead was because he refused to produce any more paintings forged with his famous father's name, so with Matt out of the way, there is no risk of him exposing Dr Reed's role in her forgery scam. Later, Dr Reed is killed falling down the stairs and Veronica confesses to the police that she accidentally killed Matt. But, it's Stubbs' body they find in the lake and Veronica is arrested on suspicion of murder. Matt then reveals himself to Louise and tells her that his hand is so badly injured he cannot paint ever again. He wants to punish Veronica for destroying his greatest passion and the best way he can do that is to see her convicted for the murder of Stubbs. If Louise goes to the police, then Veronica is guilty of no more than wounding Matt, and Matt may end up in gaol for killing Stubbs, although he could claim self-defence. For Matt, seeing Veronica banged up in gaol for murder is sweet revenge for hurting him so badly. He thinks that Louise will understand how he feels because she loves him. But, he has misjudged her. So, if he lets Louise live, she will go to the police and spoil his plan. Does he kill Louise at the very end to stop her talking? I cannot say for certain but I'm pretty sure that he does.

Wow, when i posted on here i never expected to get a reply from the actual writer, and to get a complete answer to the ending was amazing. To be honest i thought i would be lucky to get a couple of replies but this was a very nice surprise. As merlin-2 was hoping the film would generate some discussion i will re-read the reply and try to come up with some further queries, as soon as i finish my dam assignment.

Cheers anyway merlin-2, you have been surorisingly helpful and remember there will always be someone crackpot who won't appreciate anything you do.
