One of the worst movies....

Was it just me or did this movie suck?!!? Stallone is the worst actor I have ever seen. He should just quit acting entirely. He plays the same role in every movie hes in.

reply

Stallone? Are you serious? I can understand what you mean when you say 'he plays the same role', but doesn't Pacino, or Connery? When you think about it, all actors bring a sense of themselves in the characters they play, and when we as viewers watch more and more of the same actor's work, we tend to get the feeling that its the same character. It's only an illusion. Did you forget Rambo, the psyched out Vietnam vet, or Rocky, the simple-minded fighter with a heart of gold. Or Oscar, or Franky, or any other character Sly played over the years.
Stallone is one of the greatest actors out there. Not that he is fit for theatre, but he brings real emotion to the screen, as well as a great sense of humor and charisma.
His filmography speaks for itself. He brought characters to life and made them immortal (and I mean forever). He is and will always be the people's champ and favourite. You really can't find an actor that has had this much praise and respect from viewers , and for so long, than Sly. Actors come and go, but people will never forget Stallone whether you like his work or not.

As for why his latest work goes straight to video, well I'm not implying that I'm an expert, but hey its Hollywood. Things like this always happen, countless great works ending on the videorack.
But Stallone will be back, I'm sure of it. The tough, suave, classy Italian will be back.

One note on the movie, which I liked by the way (I class it as a romantic comedy, with great performances from Stowe and Stallone), It was a pleasure to see the late great Anthony Quinn for one more time. Now thats a guy who can't be ridculed for being in a movie that was released straight to video, can he?

I couldn't stand this movie, what bothers me is this is the last movie Anthony Quinn, would be in. Not a great last film for such a great actor.

This was the worst movie I've ever seen. Sly's performance here was flat and uninspired. He looked like he didn't know what he should be doing through out the whole movie. There's no build up of his character, we are just to assume that because he's always a tough guy in movies that he will be in the one too. It's a real let down when he doesn't kill anybody the fun way, like in Rambo, or say any cool lines. He shoots a guy through a book. Big deal. The really crappy part about this movie is that he is the best part. Anthony Quinn got predictably killed, and he gave a lousy performance. I think the fat guy from the Delicio Pizza commercials is in this movie - he's eating a pizza or something. Madeline Stowe could't act her way out of a cardboard box. She made a bad movie even worse. I've seen better acting in Kindergarten plays. There's that stupid cheezy romance novel guy who should have the words "I'm going to try to kill you later on in the movie" tattoed on his head. On top of all the bad acting, they put in the stupid music at all the parts where there might be some suspense. It's the same kind of music you'd see in a disney movie when a mouse is sneaking behind a cat. It went straight to video, because it's such crap, but it shouldn't have even made it that far.

my thoughts exactly brother..

stallone is a shitty actor, end of story.

Pacino is 10x better than him

reply

The movies sucks but NOT because of Madeleine Stowe. It was the horrible script. NO one could save it. It was supposed to be a drama originally until changed.

reply

If you don't like Sly, then why waste your time posting about him on the message board of one of his movies? Since you like Pacino so much, go to the boards for one of his movies, & post away.

Yes, the movie had it's problems, but it was supposed to be a satire of a film. Sly may not be the best comedic actor, but he does try, & usually is successful. People, like yourself, will always critize him for his work. Why? Because most people will never give him a chance.

So, how is a satire of a mafia movie supposed to be inspiring? It's a comedy-drama film, so take it as it is. Most of Sly's films are the same...if you like his previous ones, then you'll like this one.

It's funny since the people that critize him over & over again, are the same ones who always have been doing. If you don't like his films, then why continue watching? You know you won't like them, so stop complaining baout them. Leave these message boards to the fans who truly like his movies.

I don't think that the characters from Rocky, Rambo, Nighthawks, Cop Land & Get Carter are all the same? Similar yes, to the fact that Sly enjoys playing the roles of the underdog in his films. I think it's more believable this way. Sly is not the worst actor...I think, as many people do, that he does a fine job. Why is he a bad actor, because the way he talks? If so, that's a bit discriminating, don't you think? Doesn't say much about yourself.

Instead of leaving negative posts about Sly, so leave positive posts about your favorite actors then.

Desperado Fan, don't let these people get to you, Sly is a great actor, he might not be the best in Hollywood but he aint the worst either not by a long shot. I have always liked him and have enjoyed most of his films. And lets not forget - he's filled more cinema seats than most and most of his peers. Also, as you said - if he is indeed as bad as these ppl say then why do they continue to watch his movies?

My idea of a bad actor would be Keanu Reeves

sly was the god of action "cheer them on" films and really he has more charisma in that genre than any of his other action actors. i think realistically bruce wills would come second in his die hard and die hard 3 roles, but sly is really the epitomy of action heroes as he posses every quality of one. although i will admitt he is old and really burnt out and his prime is well over. mostly coz he's old. gaining and loosing all that weight really done something to his skin. it looks all withered. suprising really.

I think it's a shame Stallone end up making some bad decisions in his career, but mainly it's the deals to make 2-3-4-5 movies for a certain amount of money, to which he's forced to make the movies that has very bad scripts. Again, if Stallone gets the right chance to do what he wants to do for a movie, it will be a good movie. I just can't understand why it's so important that most people will grant him succes if he makes another movie like rambo & rocky just like they were succesful. You can't possibly expect that???

I was kind of let down by this movie. I was expecting a serious action adventure with a lot of explosions and innovative whacking from Stallone’s character. But all I got was a romantic comedy with a mobster twist. The description made it seem like Stallone’s character would be out for revenge on the men who killed his father figure, Angelo in a vicious way while trying to protect Stowe’s character and not make the same mistake, he made when he failed to protect Angelo in the beginning of the film. Something like man on fire was more of what I was expecting from this film but obviously didn’t get.

I personally only like to see Stallone in action films and ironically action films are what two of his biggest hits Rocky and Rambo were. Maybe an action film with a good storyline and some side stuff would be better for Stallone rather than trying to play everyday characters in romantic comedy’s and family films.

The biggest disappointment though would be when Stallone's character killed the guy who killed Angelo. All he did was shoot him with a concealed gun and that was that. Realistically if someone kills someone who means so much to you, you’re not going to let them off so easy. This scene could have been more drawn out rather than shooting the guy in the head right away and calling it a day.

This is definitely one of the worst movies ever.

Not because of Stallone. Stallone's acting is fine.

The script, characters, and atmosphere of this film are all simply horrible.

I could not even bring myself to watch this whole movie. It was so atrociously bad that I could not stomach it.

This movie is an abomination that should be erased from history.

I am shocked that this movie has gotten a score of 4 from IMDb voters - it is nowhere close to being worth 4 points.

Any score above zero is being ludicrously kind to this piece of dung.

Just watched this movie, and was utterly surprised. Being a SLy fan all my life, I expected another action-adventure-drama, but what I got was a romantic comedy! Never before had a seen a character like that from SLy, and thought he did a wonderful job playing it. And the movie as a whole was very good.
As for the other jabronis posting on this--all I can say is that they have problems. The person who said anthony quinn's performance was horrible--NOT REALLY THOUGH! He was dying when he shot this movie and died while they were shooting the sicily scenes. Show some respect to one of the greats.
As for the Sly haters, why are you here? I hate certain actors and actresses, yet I don't go to their sites to bash them, I could care less what they're doing, or what movies there in. I simply don't watch their movies.
Sly in my opinion is the greatest actor ever. That's my opinion, and I don't care about yours.

Stallone is an incredible actor. Anyone who thinks otherwise doesn't have a clue what good acting is.

I think he gets a bad rap because of his slurred speech. Also, well, he HAS been in a few real stinkers. "Over The Top" could be considered a rather bad career move.

This movie IS pretty bad, but not because of the actors. Someone earlier posted that is was not originally supposed to be a comedy, but was changed during production. That really shows, with the actors desperately trying to make a comedy out of marginally-funny lines. The screenplay is pathetic.

reply

I hated this movie. Like someone else said, I don't fault the actors. Stallone is charming and likeable in the picture and so is Madeline Stowe but the story is ridiculous. I bought the DVD when it first came out and the cover of it makes it sound like a dramatic action-thriller. I was intrigued, especially when I also found out it was the final film of Anthony Quinn. When I discovered that this was a screwball romantic comedy I wanted to vomit. The story is lame, the pacing is slow. Quinn is practically the best thing about the movie but he is only in it for about 10 minutes.

reply

Oh, I disagree. It wasn't the greatest movie ever or anything but it was cute and I had fun watching it.

reply

I don't know. Maybe I need to rewatch it again. It was cute seeing Sly take a stab at romantic comedy.

Sly is a great talent. He wrote Rocky. Starred in Rocky and keeps himself in shape. At 60 plus he could still out bench most guys half his age.
He is Italian icon. How many Italians (and a virtual unknown in the biz) get a chance to write and star in a movie. I'll go see this flick just cause he and the late great A. Quinn is in it.

Go Rocko!!!! Nuff said!!!
