Why did Vince flush his stash??

ok so there are probably more pressing plot holes/incongruities in the film, but this has been bugging me all day.
Amy "calls" the cops, Vince fills his pants and decides to do a runner, packs up his gear and looks out the door. Now later we find out Amy didnt actually call the pigs at all, so why didnt Vince leggit? Are we meant to assume that coincidentally there was a cop car outside, or was this just another dubious device to keep them all in the room?
i kind of feel that the film wouldnt have been hurt too badly by having a bit more reasoning for this and alot of the other things that happened during the film. maybe this was just a gimmick to make us think there was more substance than there realy was by having to fill in alot of gaps ourselves (Donnie Darko anyone?) Or maybe i was just heartbroken at seeing those lovely buds going down the pan.
cheers

I think he had a moral epiphany at the last minute when he saw his friend was not going to run with him so he decided to stay too and ultimately did not want to get busted with all those drugs.

that's obviously what happened. Strange that the topic creator didn't get this. Too stupid I guess.

Why call people stupid? If you enjoyed the movie, you should be happy to discuss its intricacies. I know I am. =)

Exactly.

Man, he was high! HE was running on instinct. I think he acted exactly as clearly and in the same way any person would. You are looking at the movie from the wrong angle when you pull out facts like that. If the movie earns it, like this film does, than accept the character's choices on their own terms, not by your logic.

I believe the other guy thanked him or sumthing, i don't remember very well, and then he still thought the police was on the way, so he felt guilty of his friend being accused of rape, so he threw everything down the toilet so he could stay with him.

I thought of it that way, that's why he had this small fit of rage and hit the floor and everything, cause it was against his will, but he just had to do it.

I recall thinking this later. Really when he opened the door and closed it I really did think she called the cops as opposed to my previous thoughts that she did not.

Its really simple, remember when he aksed amy to come by on the phone? He sais he had no car. So when his friend decided to stay he had no choise, but to stay also (or run on foot)

reply

Also remember how she said they usually took about 4 minutes to attend to calls in the state, and that was about the time he took to make up his mind and pack. So the police would be around, and would easily spot a suspicious looking guy running like crazy with a bag.

So, also influenced by his friend’s decision, he took the best "get away" move, which would be to throw it all away and pretend it was a false alarm when the police arrived.

But let's not forget the reason why each one stayed, John decided to face his "penalty" as a way of redemption, while Vince was coward and just tried to get away with his felony. So we get the feeling John is actually forgiven by Amy, while Vince is despised by her.

This movie is very simple, but flawless and powerful in what it is. I guess I can already declare myself a Linklater fan.

OK. Your question really made me laugh: Why, oh why, did Vince have to flush his stash? (That's how I read your question, having just seen the surprisingly great movie). I think that's safe to call "an aberrant reading", fixing on something totally irrelevant to the movie's point. Like: so sad somebody's shirt got ruined while someone's life was saved. Or something. Anyway, the movie was great, and like Amy/Thurman says: "There's always more drugs, Vince" - to which the deflated Vince replies: "Yeah, but I liked THOSE". Your kind of thinking, huh, Mustapha? So sad about those drugs... They were MOVIE-drugs, Mustapha, STORY-drugs! Not like you could have scraped them off the screen.

I agree, though - lovely looking buds.

As for the reason for the flushing? Vince, high on pot and coke, looks outside the door, goes "Oh no!" and runs to the bathroom to flush. Reasonable enough drug-delusion, seeing a confirmation of what he fears (like a passing cop-car, some dark silhouettes of men, or he reconsiders - thinking he won't be able to run fast enough or far enough). Though like so often with dope-heads, it turns out to be a misinterpretation, becoming a self-fulfilling fear.

some people just can't watch horror movies without imagining the killer actually coming for them or their loved ones... I am not onle of those people, I'll watch grinning chomping popcorn like an idiot. But if a half pound of moist stinky green is flushed unceremoniously my mouth is hanging open, the popcorn dropping slow-mo to the floor, my eyes welling up. It simply isn't fair.

But still you have a point... STORY drugs... I'll try and remember that, it does make me feel a little better.

he opened the door, then realized what he was doing and dropped his bag. its not that hard of a concept.

When he said "Oh No!" I thought he saw a police car, but I was stoned when I saw this, so maybe he was just paranoid like the others said.

since he thought he was going to be arrested, his best option was to flush the stuff. that scene made me so sad!

but it was all his fault anyway, because he was high as hell and because of his stupid idea in the first place.

great movie

I thought it was more that he didn't want Jon to look like the bigger man than him. They seemed to be in a constant battle to one-up each other and show some kind of superiority. Jon did it from the beginning by basically telling Vince he's a loser, and then Vince turned the tables on him with the whole rape situation. Amy even said something about Jon coming back just to get the last word.

If it was because Vince had a "moral epiphany", then wouldn't he have left the drugs to be discovered? It was just an ego thing.
