depends on how much u like skate boarding........if u love skateboarding then yeah.......but if u just do it every now and then, or not to intrested than no point, cos it would be meaningless

Watch it anyway. I'm a middle aged mom from the midwest whose only skating involved wheels on boots and a roller rink and I loved it. Bought it and have watched it many times. It's fun to re-live some of the 1970s and to hear how these kids (who are all just barely older than I am now) changed the sport with their innovations. The music is phenomenal too. Peralta and Paul Crowder do a great job of getting the reality of that time and space on film. They used some then quirky techniques (2000-2001) to tell the story so you felt the edginess. Now you see more innovative editing and techniques-do whatever you feel like doing- in even some of the mainstream films, but they really did try out some new ideas in film making too, so there are lots of reasons to watch this one.

well said, I agree fully, one of the best docs ever made on any subject. plenty of cool archival footage.

also, checkout Peralta's other masterpiece "Riding Giants" about surfing.

I've owned a pair of roller blades, but other than that, I have not had anything to do with skating, let alone skate boarding. I think this is one of the best documentaries that I have seen in a long time. Hell, it's one of the few docu's out there that I have actually watched.

If anything, its a neat lesson into the world of skate boarding and how it all came to be what it is today. Plus, I am a sucker for stories like Jay Adams. His story alone, is why I keep watching it over and over.

Well, I personally have zero interest in skating, in fact skaters usually annoy me. But this documentary totally hooked me, I've watched it more than once. I guess it's because even though I was never really into skating, I do have memories of reading Skateboard magazines over at my friends houses when I was a kid in the 70s, and remember them worshiping Alva and the Dogtown crew in general. But honestly I think the main reason is that it's just a very well done documentary.

I just caught this last night and thought it was an excellent documentary. I did skateboard back when I was younger but that was like 13-15 years ago, so it did bring back some memories but it was more interesting just seeing how the skateboarding revolution came to be...I've always had an interest in how things evolved into what they are today and they do a great job with this one really portraying the rise of skateboarding and a great look back into the 70s.

Arrogant, scum of the earth youths turned has-beens wallow in nostalgia and pat each other on the back for an hour plus in this one-sided doc. This was the film equivalent of listening to a washed up high school quarterback drunkenly recount the embellished particulars of a game winning drive in some irrelevant playoff game decades earlier. Originators sure, but innovators? They all admit to stealing the moves of a popular surfer and replicating them on a skateboard. The skillset of the Zephyrs was extremely limited. Their moveset was completely one-dimensional and repetitive. The tricks put on display here would hardly rival even the most amateurish skaters of today.

Nice try, troll.

KiBL : but we're talking about vision...how fast does it travel?

reply

Yeah, its an excellent documentary-even if you hate skateboarding, its an important film.

Couldn't agree more.I first caught the last 25 minutes of this 3am ish one night and was hooked and kept an eye out for it being repeated because I knew that I was watching something special and different.

Eventually I got lucky and saw the whole thing and was engrossed from beginning to end and watched it again the other night. For some unknown reason it's always on late at night....niche market?

Personally,I have never even picked a skateboard up and at my age am highly unlikely to do so (my grandchildren would have a fit),so the admiration of the documentary isn't a 'sports history' interest.

Put simply, this film is,as the blurb says, showing the birth of something new and exciting and different that is against the convention of the time. The old film taken at the time is fabulous and the action pictures are extraordinary and it is clear they knew they were doing something edgy...and pushing at the limits. It's a privilege to witness it.
Plus the gang themselves were accessible and had plenty to say no matter how their lives had turned out.

As said elsewhere on here....the soundtrack is great too..

Give it a chance...hopefully you'll enjoy it.

'Off the record, on the QT, very Hush,Hush!
