Bebop fans also fans of Firefly/serenity?

Hi peeps, I saw the series first on adult swim, (ty adult swim for everything, esp aqhf, and CB) and then i rented the movie. I love the series and the movie, i like the series a bit better. I put off seeing Serenity cause the horrible trailer but im glad i caught it in the theatre, i loved it. I was really happy when i found out that Firefly was the series that serenity was based on. I had no idea they were connecteed untill i saw a firefly marathin on sci-fi channel. Anyway, i was wondering if anyone on this board enjoys both firefly and bebop. They are very similar and both well done. Im glad that i syumbled onto these shows because im not really an amime fan or a sci-fi fan. Im just interested in hearing from other fans, im going to finish this and watch session 2 on dvd, it just came in the mail. I've never watched the entire series, ive just seen whatever i could on adult swim. Gotta go.

Firely/Serenity are God awful.

Short answer? No.

reply

Firefly/Serenity are awfully good.

Short answer: Yes.

Longer answer: I just watched the Bebop movie partly out of curiosity, to see why so many folk on the Firefly boards claim that Joss Whedon ripped it off. They do have some similarities, but not enough for any accusations of plagiarism to be taken seriously. But I'm glad I got the chance to make Bebop's acquaintance and will check out the series when I get the chance.

Yes i love firefly!
the movie was a disapointment because it was so graphic and voilent, and i never watched firefly for the action, i liked the atmosphere of the show.

this is the first time ive heard the rumour about it being a rip off of Cowboybebop i dont think its true though, coz in CB everything is really modern and their bounty hunters, and firefly is mostly about the outerplanets away from the aliance and modern technology, and they spend alot of time getting away from bounty hunters! they only take honest jobs too.

Whedon didnt ripoff Bebop, he ripped off Outlaw Star. Outlaw Star was written by the same guy who wrote Bebop, and is based in simular universe ( though the community is galatic, not just the solar system).
The themes and style were ripped off, but the meat is this... both shows begin identically, the main protagonist opens a metal case with steam that comes out and awakens a naked girl within said case who has special powers... shot for shot the two scenes, and the case for that matter are identical.
heres a link comparing the two shots:

aslo theres the whole bounty hunter theme..
BTW Firefly/Serenity SUCKED! (just my opinion obviously, but terrible acting, writing, and budget didnt help)

reply

Quick answer No! No! No! ok I saw serenity thought it suck. Good action but anyone with a little money, A stage and a computer can do what he did. in serenity. I never saw the firefly series and judging by the movie I am glad I did. I did however like the fight scene in the bar, good choreography and camera angles. but the sreenplay suck it went nowhere.

I thought the movie did not do the TV show justice. Although not a masterpiece, the show is enjoyable and a bit refreshing. Check it out if you get a chance.

savagebtz1 - you sir are an IDIOT,

do you think fans of the firefly series are crazy to like a crappy show? highly unlikele for a generation which has their standards set on shows like enterprise, and movies like star wars.

so firefly rocks, serenity is different from firefly, more action packed since it is a movie with bigger budget, the show isnt about action, its slow at times but one of the best sci fi out there.

reply

I'm a fan of both. I've watched Firefly the series and Serenity several times now. I'm currently in the middle of the Bebop DVD's, and I don't see that many similarities between the two personally. I could see how they'd exist in the same universe though, but unfortunely on opposite sides.
This is kinda off the subject, but I thought I'd write it anyway. I've been a fan of the sci-fi/western combination since Brisco County Jr. I just hope the next series of this type lasts longer than 1 season.

I love the TV show but when I think of Serenity the phrase "sucks ass" leaps to mind.

Anyway I can see similarities between Firefly Cowboy and Outlaw star but when you are dealing with a group of bounty hunters/smugglers on a space ship is there anything left to be "orginal" about?

reply

Thats a resounding yes from me. Im a huge fan of both CB and firefly/Serenity and i think its pretty clear that there are similiarities between the two ( western theme, soundtrack, spaceship design, characters trying to fleece each other etc ).
On a side note i'm afraid I must say that though i absolutely loved the Bebop series i really didnt care much for the movie and felt it failed to capture the unique feel of the series. Twas a major dissapointment to me.

Firefly? God No.

But if you're a sci-fi fan, then you'll probably watch anything.

reply

Serenity is very dull and stupid.
And Bebop is the greatest human beings' creation.
What they have in Common???

reply

well if you look at these scores:

imdb.com
Cowboy Bebop the Movie: 7.6/10 (4,416 votes)
Serenity (aka Firefly the Movie): 8.0/10 (39,806 votes)

Rottentomatoes.com
Cowboy Bebop the Movie: 71% Fresh, 46 Fresh votes, 19 rotten votes, Avge 6.6/10
Serenity: 80% Fresh, 126 Fresh votes, 31 rotten votes, Avge 7.1/10

so i dont think you can say Serenity sucks, it has held a higher score than Bebop even with a large review base of 40,000. To maintain that high level score over such a high number of voters is extremely hard to do.

plus take a look at the reviews of Firefly on DVD on any website and it always gets awesome reviews.

reply

A score on any of the two sites can't help you there, buddy. Nice try though. If anything you just proved that Bebop is better than that *beep* Firefly.

reply

what the *beep* your comment makes no sense, Serenity recieved higher ratings than Cowboy Bebop!

I hope by now you have finished the amazing show that is Cowboy Bebop. Althought, you probably have formed your own opinions on the relationship of the two shows. I thought I'd add my two cents to the mess. I saw Cowboy Bebop ages ago and fell in love. The movie, which doesn't retain the exact same feeling as the show, is still great, but not as great as the series itself.

I believe Serenity has a different feel thank Cowboy Bebop, but I loved Serenity. I thought it was the most entertaining movie in a really long time. It's not something that will raise awareness in movie goers, or even contain a thought provoking storyline. It is simple, well-done entertainment, which today's movies have been lacking.

I think both Serenity and Cowboy Bebop's sci-fi/western stories are amazing and should be awarded highly. I think there should be more like them in the future.

As for Firefly as a series, I have not seen it. But because of my love for Serenity, if I ever see it on sale somewhere I am purchasing it in a nanosecond.

Hell yes I'm a firefly fan.

But I've been a bebop fan a lot longer. And with Firefly/Serenity, well I have a feeling I'll forget about it eventually. But it's been almost ten years, and I'm still a Cowboy Bebop fan.

Cowboy Bebop is easily one of the greatest anime series ever made and I like Firefly/Serenity as a fine adventure series. It was a real treat to see a film version, particularly given the cancellation of the original series.

There are a few parallels between Bebop and Firefly, but mostly they are some similar characterizations and the "old west" theme. Other than that, both are very different productions, especially the stylistic composition of Bebop, which easily matches some of the best cinematography in live action contemporaries. Bebop is also a far more introspective and existential work, two traits that play very nicely into the greek tragedy story of the main character Spike Speigel.

I love Cowboy Bebop, both the show and the movie.

I haven't seen Firefly, but Serenity was pretty good.
