It may not be the end of the Rainbow

If you grew up watching cult children's show Rainbow, keep your eyes peeled. Because Zippy, Bungle, George and their smiley guardian, Geoffrey, may be back on our screens soon - this time in a sitcom!

Two writers-cum-Rainbow fans have penned six scripts and are now hawking the idea around TV companies. The original show, which ran from 1972-1992, was fronted by Geoffrey Hayes, who's excited at the prospect of a revival.

'I was contacted out of the blue by writer James Daniel, who, together with a colleague, had the idea,' says Geoffrey. 'but this time, they want to aim it at the generations of people who grew up on Rainbow, rather than children.

'The scripts are very funny. It's all about finding out where the characters are now, all these years later. It's all tongue-in-cheek, of course.'

Although Geoffrey's reluctant to give too much away, he explains that, in the storyline, the characters have all separated but circumstances bring them together again.

'They're involved in various escapades but the power of Rainbow gets them through. It's all baddies and goodies. Thanks to me, Zippy, Bungle and George get involved with some rather shady people but, eventually, I get them out of the mess they're in.

'There are references to the original Rainbow, which people will remember, but the scripts afford the opportunity to broaden the characters with regard to what's happened to them over the years since people watched the programme.'

So, will it be a period piece, with Geoffrey donning his Seventies flares and tank-tops? 'Zippy, Bungle and George didn't wear anything so they'll be alright, but my character will be brought up to date as far as fashions are concerned. It's all very exciting.'
