why did 'Rainbow' REALLY end in 1992?

One message here says that when Carlton became the new ITV region for London,
they didn't want "Rainbow", and so it was axed.

But I've also heard it 'died with the Thames franchise' when it lost to Carlton,
suggesting it was part of the broadcasting license Thames held until the end.

Does anyone know the real story behind the cancellation?

Poor Geoffrey - now in his sixties, and not exactly aging 'well'...

reply

Rainbow was rating well in ‘92 and it was well established as a much loved, entertaining and educational series for kids - there really was no good reason for cancellation other than petty TV station politics. Nobody would dream of cancelling Sesame Street, would they? Similar thing happened to Pipkins (“Pipkins” was an ATV show and “Lets Pretend” became it’s successor after ATV changed to Central).

What is "aging well" in your opinion? He's 64, not 34!

When Mr. Hayes appeared in the video for Peter Kay's "...Amarillo", he looked rather pale - don't you think?

reply

How did you want/expect him to look?

reply

Less pale and wrinkly! After all, most other TV presenters and actors of his generation look well for their age.

reply

I guess our Geoffrey needs to be introduced to the wonders of Botox!
