I've heard he was a right sod away from the cameras. Apparently he wasn't happy with his role and wanted it expanded and when the producers refused he played merry hell. Apparently he would sit in his on set chair (in a turban and holding a cigarette holder) and try to get the other actors to corpse by pulling faces at them. Still I can't bring myself to hate him. He's been very open and honest about his troubles with the booze and drugs and I admire him for that.
