Slither - What Goren said about a "gloval stop??" for an Asian accent
What was he talking about? What is it called?
shareWhat was he talking about? What is it called?
shareIt's a glottal stop- kind of a gulpy sound in the back of your throat when your glottal folds (vocal cords) close sharply. In American English it's used to skip a vowel between two hard consonants like kitten or button. It also allows a break in sound like in uh-huh. It's very common in Asia. Sorry if it's TMI but I may have just made my linguistics training worthwhile!
shareThat's a very good explanation. So what's happening when someone says "kit-n"?
"If that was a nod, nod."
Yes, it is a good explanation!
I hear "kitt-en," "did-ent," "liddle" all the time now when I never used to. Anderson Cooper is a prime offender. I don't guess there's anything really wrong with it, but it sounds affected to me.
I haven't heard Anderson Cooper do that, but the younger kids on Modern Family do it and it drives me crazy.
If that was a nod, nod.
