Seriously overrated

Just finished watching Avengers: Earth's Mightiest (which was a fine action romp) and while searching for the next superhero fix I found this show. Not even one whole season into it I felt seriously disappointed.

Animation: mostly good, but sometime there are some details, like cars and side characters which look like doodles.

Voice actors: The ones that voice the main characters are fantastic (Hamil, Conroy), the others are crap. They sound like they're popping Valiums between every sentence.

Writing: Often very lazy and uninteresting. There are some interesting episodes, but most of them are just barely watchable. And half the league is inexplicably gone trough half the episodes, even when there's a major crisis, what's up with that?

Characters: Now this is my biggest problem. First and foremost, the characters are seriously underpowered, which is a first for DC universe. They often forget their powers or just plain act out of character and very different from their comic book originals. Second, we're greeted with an astounding number of terrible B-list villains which are lame and laughable. Two genius gorillas, really, we need two?

I'm just finished watching the episode with Etrigan, which is one of my favorite DC characters, and I just can't believe what they have done with such a cool and mighty character. They've rendered his origin into a pile of *beep* and made him a total wimp.

I've never taken sides between Marvel and DC before, but I got to say that Earth's Mightiest is at least one whole level better show than this snore fest.

6/10

If you're watching the first season, then I'm not at all surprised by your being underwhelmed. The first season is really weak, and the second season has two or three standout episodes but is similarly lackluster. The show really starts to pick up in season 3, when it becomes Justice League: Unlimited. Starting around episode 6, "Fearful Symmetry," when they finally start digging into the long-term plot, the show becomes amazing. The second half of season 3 and nearly all of season 4, aka the CADMUS arc, are among the best TV I've ever watched, no lie.

You wouldn't miss much if you skipped the rest of season 1 and only watched these episodes from season 2:
Tabula Rasa (not the best episode, but important background for later seasons)
Only a Dream (if you're a Batman fan, you'll love this one. Otherwise, skip it.)
A Better World
Hereafter
Wild Cards (pretty silly, but again pretty important for later)
Starcrossed

Oh I'll watch them all, they're not bad, just not great.

Hope you're right about S3 and after being better.

I am more of a Marvel fan but I have to say the 90's Batman, Superman, Batman Beyond Justice League and Justice League Unlimited are among the best superhero stuff ever put on TV of film.

I think you'll notice an improvement even earlier, with S2. I've been rewatching this show, and just rewatched the Season 2 premiere "Twilight". On the "Twilight" commentary Bruce Timm notes that the producers sat down between seasons and took deliberate steps to improve the show, and their Season 2 mantra was "Good enough isn't good enough."

Avengers: Earth's Mightiest sorta felt like Justice League-Lite.

Justice League started off alittle slow, I never liked that early worn out Superman design from the first season. But once it got going, the show was in my opinion better written than most live action shows around at the time.

Justice League Unlimited was even better. Its a shame Cartoon Network mistreated it (Just like it does any DC series that isn't Batman or the goddamn Teen Titans) when it originally aired.

Finished.

My final impression is better than the first one, but I still think the show is overrated.

There's still an awful lot of terrible episodes and characters. For every good one there's an episode with JL babies and Batman sings the blues, for every good character there's at least one incredibly lame one, there are two of each style both heroes and villains, and for some reason, all characters seem to get incapacitated by electricity (pay attention to this!)

All in all I had some fun watching it, so I'm raising my initial score from 6 to 7, but 8.6 as the show has now is simply just too high.

reply

if this is overrated to you, then I hate to say it, but your taste in knowing whats "good" is poor. EMH is more than likely "overrated" than JL/U will ever be.

reply

"Overrated" means considered better than it is, and that is true in regards to JLU. I'm not saying EMH is a better show, all in all they're about the same quality. EMH keeps a steady quality level while JLU seems to juggle between awful and genius (hah, go figure!).

reply

It's easy for EMH to maintain a steady quality. They're standing on the shoulders of geniuses as Ian Malcom would say. Justice League made it easy for them.

^That was great. Thank you for this.
