Help me please!! Need a list of this kind of movies badly!!

Hi!

I came from an Asian country to study in the US in 1999. Storm Rider was the last old-fashion kunfu movie I saw and actually liked (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon could not satisfy me for the kungfu part although the movie is pretty good in general). Could anyone capable please do me a big favor creating a list of old-fashion kungfu movies made after 2000? I would really appreciate it. So I will look forward to their releases when they are available in DVD or in Theater in the US. I haven't seen these yet but based on what I read these should belong in the list. I would start with:

1. Hero
2. Musa

Thanks!!!

You might want to check out Bichunmoo.

For links to reviews and DVD-info, check http://www.the-isle.org/movinf/bichunmoo.html

Thanks! I will check it out. I just watched "Hero".... I really like the fighting seqences. The story was really not Wu Xia genre, but I knew it before so that's ok. I know the differences between HK and Korean productions, I actually like them both but I got chances to see more HK's movies. This kind of movies is now so rare, used to be so popular in the 90's. I really miss that period. Thanks again!

You could try The Emperor And The Assassin - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0162866/

Bichunmoo is propably the worst film ive ever seen. Watch out!

ashes of time - strange and astonishing

How about Iron Monkey? Great Kung-Fu action with Donnie Yen

reply

For a very similar movie than musa is "Warriors of Heaven and Earth", almost the same plot, great epic movie, I enjoy watching it.

the last samurai

reply

I like The Last Samurai, but I think you're way off in what this guy is looking for in a movie. TLS was extremely -Hollywood-esque, and should not be lumped together with other kung fu films.

reply

I agree. TLS is nothing of the sort when compared to this type of movies.
I heard that the trilogy "Once upon a time in China" isn't bad.
Has anyone seen it?

reply

i saw the 1st once upon in china...i wasnt impressed for it being a jet li movie, or that it revolved around the great hero "wong fei hong". After watching it, it sorta gave me the same feeling that the last of the mohigans gave me..."wow they could have done a great job with this movie...but not enough blood, or stuff....it was a waste of good actors"

Id reccomend iron monkey, hero, returner, house of flying daggers, and there is a movie with donnie yen playing wong fei hong, but i dont know the name of it....its supposed to be "ok"

reply

Ok, I just registered to reply to the comments about "Once Upon a Time in China" being lackluster. This post is not to debunk LeeConsig's opinion and I'm certainly not trying to convince anyone...all I'm saying is give it a chance.

In my experience, I've concluded that there's 3 types of martial arts movies 1)those that focus on action 2)those that focus on drama 3)those that have a balance of both. For example, many Jackie Chan movies don't have a good storyline but the action can sometimes make up for it. I find these movies entertaining and thrilling while viewing but afterward they tend to be very forgettable. "Action" movies that focus too much on drama (another Jackie Chan example would be 'Gorgous') simply disappoint me because I don't watch a movie starring a martial arts master just to see bad romance acting. Finally, the movies that balance these elements of action and drama are my favorites and I think many agree. These are movies like 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon'; 'Hero'; 'Iron Monkey'; 'Seven Samurai'(though I tend to consider samurai movies separate) and so on. I personally include the 'Once Upon a Time in China' in this category. I should mention now that I've seen the first three out of the six movies.

Indeed, the viewer will be disappointed if they expect non-stop Jet Li action. There's plenty of morals, romance, and comedy mixed in. I personally found it refreshing to see Jet Li play a character who smiles for a change. In other movies he is often portrayed as the "deadly little asian man with no emotion." I enjoyed the second and third movies most out of the first three that I've seen. For the most part they revolve around foreign policy and the need for China to protect itself from outsiders who would try to take advantage. Another prominent theme is the struggle to adjust to modernization. I found these social-political themes very interesting. These movies really makes Wong Fei-Hung seem like a patriot and are by no means "hollywood-ed up" to appeal to American audiences. As an aside, Rosamund Kwan is incredibly beautiful in the movies.

P.S. If you decide to watch the movies English dubbed, turn on the subtitles because unfortunately quite a bit is lost in translation. One more thing, I haven't seen it myself but I've heard 'The Legend' is supposed to be a really good Jet Li movie. I've seen the sequel which was just OK.

I don't mean to sound disparaging when I say this, but the Last Samurai is a crock. A highly entertaining piece of Hollywood crock, but still crock. It's really silly to watch some white guy become a 'Samurai' - think about it: it's the direct equivalent of Jackie Chan filling in John Wayne's roles in an American Western.

It's just plain offensive - to my intelligence, that is. I think it's silly to mention TLS in the same breath as this movie - MUSA is an epic achievement, and The Last Samurai is an epic a-CHEESE-ment.

reply

Well you can't go wrong with Kurosawa samurai films although obviously not Korean.

Seven Samurai is the daddy of all epic 'sword' movies and is definitely worth seeing even if it's not what the OP is looking for cos its brilliant!

Or try Seven Swords or House of Flying Daggers.

A great film is "The Legend of Ginko". Its a lot like Musa and Warriors of Heaven and Earth with a bit of fantasy thrown in. Check it out.

reply

Yes, there is a movie coming out..called seven swords, looks pretty cool, as far as movies after 2000, it is not common for wu xia films..i love them alot, ive been collecting since i was young. I heard that "the legend of ZU" is good, made around the same time as hero and shoalin soccer.or was it the same director,,tsui hark...I can mention others,,like Kung fu Cult Master, The Swordman II, The bedheaded 1000, Holy Weapons, Fong Sai Yuk, The last of hero of China, Shoalin Blade, Burning Paradise, The fiery Kid. the white hair bride...I know some of these are not post 2000, but they are from the mid 90 and late 90's if anyting, these are some of my favorite movies, i hope i was some help to you, and too anyone who really appreciates a really good kung fu flick.

There is No fight club.

i emailed Lord Adversary, who posted on a lot of the kung fu movie pages on IMDb, and this is the list he gave me:

The Tai Chi Master
Fong Sai Yuk
Drunken Master I and II
The Magnificent Butcher
Master Killer
Five Deadly Venoms
Chinese Super Ninjas
Hero Among Heros (not a great one but if you like Donnie Yen he's awesome in this one)
Legendary Weapons of China
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (i'm assuming you've seen this one also)
Fist of Legend (A MUST MUST MUST SEE)

I will also add that he has since mentioned Musa as one of the best. and i will add the following:

Iron Monkey (i haven't seen the second, but the first is one of my faves)
Snake in the Eagles Shadow (one of Jackie Chan's first movies, and i rank it up there with Iron Monkey)
Twin Warriors (ultimate betrayal of Jet Li by his best friend)
Drunken Master
Legend of Drunken Master (also called Drunken Master 2 - i preferred this one over the original)
The Contract Killer (Jet Li, Eric Tsang, Gigi Leung and Simon Yam as the "King of Killers")
The Legend of Red Dragon
The Enforcer (both this and Legend of Red Dragon had Jet Li and Miu Tse as father and son. this had a great waterfall fight scene in a restaurant)
House of Flying Daggers (not really a fighting film, more of a love story, but visually stylistic a la Hero)
Hero
and the one i am waiting for - the new version of Ong Bak with Tony Jaa hits DVD on August 30! if you'd like, i'll update as i see more.

and a final note: i have watched Legend of Zu, just for visuals, as i could not get a dubbed version and had no subtitles. as such, i am ordering the DVD to watch, but just visually, the CGI is phenomenal.

how about this:

Fighter In The Wind. Amazing movie.

War..
War never changes..

People are mostly posting off-track stuff. Why are you people posting so many kung fu movies? Where did you see kung fu in Musa? Yeasol is a great warrior with his spear. Does not mean it has to be kung fu or any martial art. This is a war epic. Martial art has nothing to do with it.

I would recommend

1. Fighter is the Wind (just like MoRmEnGiL already did)
and
2. Curse of the Golden Flower (it is not a kung fu movie, but people who enjoyed Musa and Hero will enjoy this too.

Watching movies like fist of legend is no good. It's just another totally stereotype martial art movie that has absolutely nothing new to offer.

Musa, Hero, these are epic style movies. Don't name drunken master and fist of legend with these, buddies!
