Wendigo symbol of DEVIL?!?!

in this film, which was a BIG disappointment,(DONT BELIEVE THE REVIEWS ON FRONT COVER! WHAT FILM WERE THEY WATCHING!) the wendigo takes 2 forms, stick man, and half man half deer. The second one (the 1/2 & 1/2) reminded me of the devil! It freaked me out until it moved! It serioulsy looks like some kind of devil symbol! and then the guy says "who r u....the devil?!" i was like ahhhh!

To answer from my point of view, no, the Wendigo was not meant to be a devil image. As its explained in the film, the creature is a shapeshifter and, only lord knows how, the child helped construct the creature from various things he's picked up. When he is told what the Wendigo is, the Indian explained it was half man, half beast in appearance, but was capabile of shapeshifting. So, with that bit of knowledge and what we see, we realize that the kind was inspired by the incidents around him, including the deer that was hit by the car.

The director explains on the commentary that the bits with Otis (from talking to the sheriff and then killing him to the point where Otis is hit with the car) and the times that the kid has seen the Wendigo in stick form (being chased by it after his father is shot or seeing it standing over his father) may have been just his imagination. At the end, we are left with the question of if the Wendigo and the events with Otis (and somehow, the Wendigo was given a form through the kid's imagination) was real or if it was the kids imagination and how Otis ended up in the E.R. was just a pure coincidence.

and what does the devil symbolize then?

reply

The Devil symbolizes Evil. The Wendigo is no way related to Christian/Catholic religion. The Indian Man at the store explains this to the kid, that the Wendigo is a spirit of native America and is neither good or bad.

But this one's eatting my popcorn!

It's funny how people always try and imprint christian mythology on things like this.....

They won. Let them pretend that they're right.

The definitions I have found for Wendigo are :

The origins of this supernatural entity can be traced back to Native American Indian legends in southern Canada and along Minnesota's Iron Range. In typical accounts, the wendigo is a half-phantom/half-beast, which dwells in forests and preys upon the flesh of animals and men. Some legends state that the wendigo is gigantic in proportions, sometimes alleged to be twelve feet high in stature, with a curious star marking upon its forehead or chest. Other legends state that wendigos are the spirits of men and women who once struck pacts with evil spirits to perform murderous deeds.

In the mythology of the Algonquin tribe of Native Americans, the Wendigo (or Windigo) is a malevolent supernatural creature. It is usually described as a giant with a heart of ice; sometimes it is thought to be entirely made of ice. It is noted for its fearsome cruelty and diet of human flesh. Also, any human who partook of human flesh (as a means of combating starvation) was believed to become such a creature himself. He would forever be tortured by an unyielding hunger for more human flesh.

Im from Minnesota near the iron range and I have met people who claim to have seen them

Once while talking to some older native men I was told it is common to either dream the wendigo to say ur name or or hear the wind call it in the winter

reply

i actually learned about the wendigo creatures in my American indian studies class last year and it is said that the wendigo's were once man who let their hearts and souls be corrupted and turned into these creatures craving flesh and no matter how much they ate, their craving was never fullfilled ad they grew in size everytime they consumed a human, explaining their huge size.

It then goes to say in modern day the wendigo can be seen everywhere with their business suits and brief cases and such.Basically it goes on to call the white man full of greed and such.

I in fact have never seen this movie but i saw the word "wendigo" and had to read because i knew what it represented.

ok im done now.

It funny how other cultures also have Wendigo type legends. I know their are Japanese legends about becoming a demon after eating people.

I thought it was the ghost of a japanese fiddle player or something.

I think you will find all myths repeating themselves in every culture as the only place they truly exist is in the human physcee (ok thats probs spelt wrong) just look at how people are getting "abducted by aliens" the exact same things happened 200 years ago but people back then had no knowledege of aliens so it was a ghost or demon or even wendigo

its just human nature

reply

More than 200 years ago; look at all the socalled visitations in the bible. Encounters with strange beings are everywhere in the ghoul haunted human mind.

Perhaps not a mental disorder, but why do peeps need this stuff when the universe is such a fascinating place without them?

My point is things like sleep paraylisis which is documented to give the same sensations as "alien abductees" claim to have would have happened throughout human exsistence but has only just started to be studied and understood

conditons such as this, i think have been blamed for vampires, ghosts, aliens and the like throughout history.

Its not a mass mental disorder as it only happens to a percentage of us but the rest of us dismiss it or belive it and everyone likes to belive in a bit of mystery or a scary story so the creatures we create exist in our world only because we want them to hence its human nature

hope that made sense

It made perfeckt sense, but let's keep beating this topic into the ground cuz it's so important and meaningful.
