who liked this?

Hi I was just wondering if anyone liked this movie. I watched it with two other people and no one liked it.

reply

It was very good but the wendigo didn't scare me. It was creepier when the trees would move, etc.

I watched it with two other people too. It was one of those deals where we kept waiting for something to happen.

Yeah, it seemed like they didn't have alot of resources and thought behind the movie which hurt it. Plus having the spirit look like that goofy deer didn't help.

reply

Hehe, yeah I just saw it on cable and it wasn't all that great still entertaining anough. I thought the deer was kinda cool lookin, but no not very scary. All in all, I thought it was an ok movie but not something I would reccomend anyone go out and rent.

I found it to be a wasted opportunity of the Wendigo legend - which had great scary potential.

Read the short story, 'The Wendigo' by Algernon Blackwood - and get a real sense of the terrifying movie this could have been.

Wow, i didn't think that i would be the only one on the block who thought this was a brilliant film, which i did. I found it to be a very exciting and scary film, and while it deals with fantastic issues, it never seems to do it in a splashy way. Fassenden has a gift for strong characters and dialogue, and a sense of realism that is the key to any truly effective horror movie.

check out his take on vampires, HABIT. Not a story you have seen before.

This movie was brilliant- even it shouldn't necessarily be classified as 'horror' movie... the dialogue was and character developement was the some of the best I've ever seen in a suspense movie.
And the woods... the entire feeling captured, perfect! I grew up near the mountains-- we'd go visit my grandmother who lived in the woods. Our parents would shoo us out of the house at night and I remember crouching on the porch, staring through the web of branches beyond, terrified of what dark unknown lurked in the forest.
This movie is seen mostly through the kid's eyes- bizarre smatterings of the horrors that could only exist in a child's imagination and his fear of the big, unknown world, and the *beep* up people there-in.
Ending was a bit of a let-down, but still, beautiful work.

I just watched the movie last night and was very disappointed. It could have been SOOOO much better. I loved the camera work but thought the Wendigo was one of the cheesiest 'monsters' I've seen in quite some time. The movie left a lot of questions unanswered and I'm hoping some of you enthusiasts out there can help me out.

1. Why was the house haunted?
2. What did any of the Wendigo stuff have to do with anything in the movie?
3. Why did Otis see the Wendigo?
4. Why was Miles the only one to see it (until Otis)?

I have more but will leave it at this for the time being....

Do you guys think it was scary in a Mothman Prophecies kind of way?

reply

Was Mothman Prophecies scary? Guess I missed something when I saw it ;-).

Nobody wants drama though man, we get enough of that in real life. Movies are the best way to escape reality & just have a fun ride while watching it. That's why horror movies are so good. It's not all gore & saying "yeah, murder that guy murder him good" I am a horror nut but that's not what it's about for me. It's good imagination with cool looking villians & mindless fun. I don't want a stupid story that I have to think about forever. I want to leave a movie saying "I gotta see that one again."

Don't wander into abandend churches for Czakyr will grab you from underneath the watery grave.

this film is neither strong nor moving...the character development was minimal...as nothing of note happened....you wait till the end hoping sumthing memorable happens...and it dont...more intelligent people should look at japanese titles such as the eye or dark water for a much better example at ho such movies should be handled

I had started watching this movie twice and fallen asleep both times. I figured that it started out lying there like a deer hit by a car and just when you were lulled into thinking nothing would happen... BOOM!! It would jump up and rip your guts out. But I was wrong. It just rolled over and died. I think there is something going on in this movie, because when I finally watched it all the way through, I was left with a "Huh?" But I really don't get the end. Is it supposed to mean something?

Welcome... to the Golden Age of Rehash.

**For all, not a rebuttal directed toward lupus2012**
********************************************************

Movies are seldom as good as the books from which they are derived . . . . . same here.
What it seems most of the folks weilding such disappointment toward this film are missing is the director's treatment of the subject matter:
1) mostly from a mystical/metaphysical and childs' point of view.
2) the Native American -- he has the major influence on the boys' outlook and ability to cope with the rigors of life being thrown his way, odd though they were.
3) the premonitions the boy has "apparently" confuse you folks - he was tapping into something, something that is never quite defined in the film -- -- but is consistant and helps the boy piece things together for himself, in his own way. Kinda like grace under pressure, young boy style.
4) the apparent need for thrills, chills and spills by the general audience was not metered-out by this film -- -- sorry folks, this one focused in a minimal way on typical character development, forsook that to focus on the reason for the Wendigo and didn't rely upon the latest and greatest creature creation to carry the spirit of the film.
5) when the boy starts to piece things together, it is symbolized by his carrying and somewhat weilding the Wendigo figurine . . . . .

I'm not saying it's an industry-changing film -- no major breakthroughs in story-telling, but stayed simple and somewhat elusive to retain a quality of mysticism -- I think it worked. Whatever happened to "less is more"?? Oh, that's right, Hollywood . . . . . "reality TV" . . . . . CGI vehicles . . . . . shall I stop?? Nuff said??

This was truly a decent film, except for the unnecessary sex scene, a decenly told story.
Beats the hell outta the sensationalism that surrounded "Blair Witch" -- -- simple-minded folk sure took the bait on THAT money-making piece-o-crap. Rocks being banged together -- -- OOOH, I'M SCARED!!!!

I would never "disallow" anyone their opinion -- nor do I demand acceptance of mine -- we all have different influences and preferrences which shade our opinions, likes and dislikes.

My friend and I rented this film along with some others on halloween a couple of years ago, hoping for a night of frights. Instead we got what we both felt was one of the worst things ever put to film.

We rented it largely because Patricia Clarkson was in it, because we're both fans of hers. Looking back, I'm not sure why she agreed to do this film, unless maybe she lost a bet or was being forced to be in it by a gunman somewhere off camera. I was embarrassed for her while watching this, and hope the paycheck was worth it.

I thought the pacing was awful. There are long stretches where nothing happens, nothing is being said of any importance, nothing is progressing the story along at all, and then BAM, some "creepy" scene pops up that seems to have little or no bearing on the rest of the story.

I didn't feel like there was any character development at all. And the ending was so laughably bad, we rewound it and watched it over and over, laughing at how ridiculous it all was. The guy in the deer suit running around was priceless. So not exactly the festival of fright we were looking for.

If the film was trying to set a creepy tone through atmosphere, and explore mythology and the metaphysical, I think it failed miserably. However, if it was trying to be a snoozefest with a muddled, incongruous ending, it succeeded admirably.
