Why this movie is CRUD

Happened to go to grad school with one of the writers 25 yrs ago, both fans of the horror/sci fi genre. We saw Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and he just did not get it. He thought it was one of the worst horror films ever, because it didn't have a plethora of effects and fantasy elements (monsters, etc). Well, here's his film, as a writer, and what the hell happened to it?

Havent seen it but any films with andrew stevens in i avoid like the plague
