How Can This Not Be Released??

How on Earth can a movie starring Al Pacino, Kim Basinger, Tea Leoni not be released???? I couldn't believe this when I read it...Does anyone know???

Please let me know

reply

Its already on video in Australia which can not be a good sign. It is a poorly made movie with obvious chunks cut out.

It would have done more harm than good to the above mentioned actors if it was released

let me just disagree with you there!!
al goes GREAT in this one! as for basinger...not so well... but then comes leoni! she is very good...and you haven't notice that yet!!

I have recently viewed this film and it is pretty good (7/10). I am not a huge conspiracy nut, however, this film does paints a VERY dim picture of the (fictional?) Polictical landscape in New York. At the heart of the film is a consortium of Jewish professionals who do all sorts of things to prevent the Mayor's reelection. It feeds on common perceptions on the Jewish power system in America, in fact it pretty much "sensationalizes" (sp?) their omnious role. Damn interesting, but have you ever seen a film that cast the Jewish American race in a negative light? This would have been this film.

"I don't know where that clown came up with the info that it's available in Aussie-it's not-the distribution company would not let it be seen anywhere"

How unbelievably arrogrant of you not to believe the previous Australian poster. It WAS released straight to video, only through the Video Ezy chain in Australia on December 26 2002. I KNOW this because I just watched it a couple of hours ago and thought it was very good, not outstanding but Pacino looking more frazzled than he did in Insominia (this time playing a burnt out PR) was excellent as usual.

If you don't believe me, do a search:

The official version, from the Director himself at a Movies101 (www.movies101.org) screening April 23, 2003, regarding the final cut.

Film was finished on Sept. 1, 2001. Of course, with the events of Sept. 11, and the scenes including the WTC being a prominent part of the film, certain painful changes had to be considered. The director also had his hands full due to the fact that he lived within shouting distance of ground zero at the time.

There were no new scenes shot, but two cuts, one crucial and one not so much, had to be made. The non-crucial cut had to do with a scene of a cab ride down 5th Ave approaching Washington Square. Anyone familiar with the NY street scene will remember that as the arch is approached, the twin towers would just pop into view, framed by the arch itself.

The crucial scene that was cut, which I will not describe lest it become a spoiler, prominently feature the towers in a sequence setting up the final scene of the film. Without the setup, the final scene loses quite a bit of impact and may leave many film viewers perplexed as to its meaning. Hopefully, the DVD version retains both scenes, as painful as they may be, they were the original vision of the director and preceded the tragic events.

The film is opening in NYC on April 25, 2003.

People I Know was fully financed by the global sales and distribution company Myriad Pictures for $22 million and during filming in April 2001, Miramax came onboard as US distributor. Miramax delayed the release of the Al Pacino vehicle after the September 11th attacks and the pic had scenes that took place at the World Trade Center, which were re-edited. Miramax then unsuccessfully tried to sell the film off to another distributor. It collected dust for almost two years before it was dumped with barely a sign that it even existed. People I Know opened in 5 theaters to $34,211 — never expanded beyond 8 locations and closed its brief theatrical run with just $126,793. The film was mostly dumped straight to video overseas throughout 2003 and 2004 and pulled in $5,572,241 across numerous distributors.

People I Know (2003) — Budget, $22 million. Box office, $126,793 (domestic), $5.7 million (worldwide). This was filmed for release in 2001 but was delayed due to 9/11, which required the World Trade Center being edited out. Critics took it to class for its derivative and incoherent plot and it died in limited release.
