Who's child was it anyway? (spoilers)

Who's child was Lily pregnant with? She believed it was the mermaid's, but how could that happen? Even if mermaids are asexual, human beings aren't. And when and how did the conception take place? Telepathy? And the child seen at the end wasn't even half mermaid. I can only conclude that the baby was her boyfriend's/husband's. (Did they say if they're married?) But I thought the only reason the mermaid didn't kill her was because she was pregnant with her child.

So, who's child was it?

I'm pretty sure the child is the mermaids since during the very er...interesting sex scene they (the girl and the mermaid) had some telepathic connection and I think the child is conceived then. They imply that the child at the end is a mermaid because her eyes flash that weird red...although I think they leave it open in order to create a second movie.

The mermaid was a morph-- obvious by it's three forms. Therefore, it may or may not have actually been female. I personally don't believe she was, b/c she showed no interest in any man (other than for a meal), which would be needed for her to concieve a child w/ a human if she was.

I don't think we are supposed to know how Lily became pregnant, but it was definitely the mermaids child. The child was half mermaid, at the end she delivers the line: "As for the mermaid, would I see her again... 'yes', but that's another story" as her child's eyes flash to red and back again.

I believe it was the mermaid's baby. In the Diary Lily reads how the old man who previously owned the mermaid, how his wife became pregnant and didn't understand because she was already an old woman. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't she kill herself because of it and that was why the old man would not let the mermaid go?

Um, no, the mermaid killed the sailor's wife, probably because she was trying to escape when the wife saw her. By the way, I think the child is Lily's boyfriend's, not the mermaid's; females don't have sperm. I think the mermaid just enabled Lilly to become pregnant, then influenced the embryo with her powers so it would be born strange. By the way, the reason the mermaid didn't like men was because they were so often greedy and only saw her as a money profit. Lilly was the only one on the ship kind to her, remember?

My opinion on this subject is this:

The baby Lily conceived was infact Angus' (her boyfriend). I think Lily had some kind of connection with the mermaid, which is why her child was in fact part of the mermaid world, so to speak. As of mermaid conception: since the genitalia is found in the fish-tail, merfolk's conception is outside the body of the female, not inside; as is with the case of actual fish. That is why I don't agree with merpeople pictures having a belly-button! Merpeople don't have an umbilical cord!

I had the feeling that the baby was a "gift" to Lily from the mermaid, due to her realizing Lily was a kind person and caring towards her. If she, physically within Lily, as she was in her mind, conceived, then Lily would (with Angus). But just that once. Now she would be barren again.

reply

Yeah, i'm pretty sure it's the mermaid's baby. didn't they say that Lilly was barren, which I'm pretty sure means she can't have children. there was an entire scene where she was like "I know it's physically impossible, but I'm pregnant" and the sailors wife was too old to concieve but she was impregnated by the mermaid as well. I think that when Lilly was having sex with Angus, she was telepathically having sex with the mermaid and somehow conceived the child then. weird, I know, but come on. it's a sci-fi movie about a man eating mermaid who can telepathically communicate with a woman and seems to have lesbionic tendancies.

The answer is in the Script. The Queen of the Lair, "Moreski, Rudi" Coralia, Sihrena, ...She has Powers the other don't. Certain Pagan Religion esteem her The Highest of Fertility Symbols. In short - (Magic)

This movie, (one of my favorites) is full of magic.

Nearly everything is explained in the script with the exception of how the captain would not know that there is a Mermaid aboard. This is where you really have to suspend belief. Because a ship that small could not possibly hide the fact the a Tank is in a room on the ship and in that Tank is a Mermaid. But it's a movie, so that is how they get away with that one.

reply

I had to suspend belief when the captain walked away from the helm and went walking about below deck. He didn't even tether the wheel to try and keep the ship on course.

Where did you find the script? I've been looking for it but I can't find it.

I was curious. At some point when the mermaid was out of the tank, it could be been when the sailors were carrying her, but I thought I noticed something different about the bottom fish half of her body. Did it show fish genitalia? Kind of odd, I know, but I thought I noticed something different.

So when they were doing it, was Lilly imagining that she was on top of the mermaid?
