Mermaids equal sirens, who preyed on sailors! That's part of the lore: Mermaids are carnivorous or at least drown people. There also are vicious mercreatures in that Harry Potter movie and in "Peter Pan" (2003).
The tail-to-legs transformation occurs in the fairytale "The Little Mermaid" by Hans Christian Andersen and all of the film versions. Also, this was used in "Splash" and has been in several other mermaid films, about as often as they keep the tail. Most tails look basically the same. Check out other movies for comparison: "Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid", "Miranda", "Mad About Men", "Mermaids of Tiburon", "Aquamarine", "Fishtales", "Magic Island", and other mermaid films.
ALL mermaids tend to live in some secret cove or underwater cave, often in communities. In "Splash", she has a home in a sunken ship but takes him to what obviously is a city where she lives.
No. "POTC IV" DOES NOT "ripoff" this movie anymore than this movie is a "ripoff" of previous mermaid films.
Is it because you have never watched other films? It sounds as if you are judging on the bases of only two movies. Shame on you! Do your homework!
