Ok movie but I have a few Q's *spoilers*

For Halloween my brother and I rented some of what we thought were "crappy" horror movies. He picked this one out cause he thought the mermaid was hot. At first I was shocked. The acting and story were phenominal. (my opinion). It was great! But what the hell did they do to the end of the movie? That was awful. The mermaid morphed into some kind of old fashioned monster. Which didnt look very aerodynamic (sp?) (Like it doesnt look like it could swim very fast through the water.) Anway, I am torn whether or not I actual like the movie. And I have some questions I was hoping people could answer for me. . .

1> In the begininng the old woman came to kill the mermaid the same way Lily did. Yet the mermaid killed her but not Lily. Why was that? Wasn't the old lady pregnant with the mermaid's child too?

2> Is there a sequel, because i would see it.

3> The queen of the mermaids isnt a very good "provider" as Lily put it. I mean she has been gone for so long and she brings back a ship with maybe 12 dead men for her the entire mermaid population. I am not very good at math but. . .

4> So could someone explain the whole little girl? What is she?

5> Why did the mermaid learn to say Angus's name? What did that signify?

6> When the mermaid touched Lily w/ her tail did that help her become Lily in a way (Like the sex scene?)

I dunno, am I making any sense?

i think I had more. . I'll post later when I remember.

When I say I gotta yak, I don't have a long-haird buffalo sittin' next to me.

Just saw it last night and will try to answer some of the questions!!

1> In the begininng the old woman came to kill the mermaid the same way Lily did. Yet the mermaid killed her but not Lily. Why was that? Wasn't the old lady pregnant with the mermaid's child too?

IMHO, I think that the statement that the Old Captain made has been overlooked! He said that the Mermaid Queen was a fertility Goddess of sorts and can make women fertile, thus the pregnancy of the old women, I think that the mermaid made both (unfertile)women fertile, hence their pregnancies BUT the old woman tried to kill her whereas Lily tried to save her therefore the Mermaids loyalty at the end.

2> Is there a sequel, because i would see it.

I am sorry I don't know.

3> The queen of the mermaids isnt a very good "provider" as Lily put it. I mean she has been gone for so long and she brings back a ship with maybe 12 dead men for her the entire mermaid population. I am not very good at math but. . .

Yes, this is true, but at the same time, her captivity had something to do with that.

4> So could someone explain the whole little girl? What is she?

Personally I think she is human and the flashingeyes thing at the end was there to show us that the nature of her conception was 'aided' by the mermaid, though I admit that it is left unsettled so as to give some ambiguity for a sequal possibility!

5> Why did the mermaid learn to say Angus's name? What did that signify?

That was indeed strange, I think they perhaps wanted to show that the mermaid was learning something from Lily, as in, she knew that Angus was important to Lily.

6> When the mermaid touched Lily w/ her tail did that help her become Lily in a way (Like the sex scene?)

I don't know HOW she did it, Lily was already pregnant by the sex scene and she knew/suspected it! Getting biological, I think the mermaid, either through some telekenesis or something, allows whatever inhibits a woman from conceiving is corrected (lack of ovulation for the old woman, uterine/overarian complications for Lily)therefore aiding conception, therefore both women though had to be enjoying a healthy sex life because they needed sperm! I can understand that with Lily but the Old couple??? Wa-Hey!!!!

Hello! I saw these questions and thought I'd offer an opinion for a few of them. Yes, there is supposed to be sequel, but I don't know if they're still going to do it. And as to question number 6, I don't think the tail-touching did anything; the mermaid was probably just trying to observe Lilly (like the scene where she stood right in front in her and stared at her face.) Hope this helped! Keep your eyes open for the sequel

I think that there could have been many providers all over the world, like a mermaid militia. Yeah thats the ticket

I don't know if any of us are sure exactly what is meant by her being the provider. It seems that some here are getting the idea that she intentionally was caught to bring the whole ship to the island. I think the fact that she was captured and on a ship full of people gave her the convenience to feed her fellow mermaids and get back home as well.

I respect your opinion, but I thought this was way better than "OK".

Anyway....it was mentioned, in the movie, when Lily was trying to talk about the things she was reading, to Angus, that the Mermaid was only fed twice after being captured by the Seat Captain and his wife. And she had been with them for a long time already. So obviously, they do not need to feed very often, and since "magic powers" are involved they probably don't need to eat very much.

The part where the mermaids tail touched Lily was simply showing her and us, how easy she really could get to her, if she wanted. It was a foreshadowing of the mermaids, intelligence, danger and strength. It was the first time, I believe, that Lily or anyone for that matter, is frightened by her.

I thought that same about the part when the Mermaid said "Angus", out loud. This was sort of like a threat or warning and THAT was what upset Lily so much. Lily seemed more fearful that the mermaid wanted to hurt Angus, than she seemed concerned for herself. Lily believed the sea Captain from the beginning, that the mermaid was dangerous, no one else but Lily seemed to recognize the danger the mermaid was posing and when the mermaid whispered Angus' name, it was a confirmation. I am pretty sure that part happened either right before or right after Lily's nightmare. This was my take on the film, which I REALLY LIKED!!!

And I disagree with those who think that the mermaid was somehow part of Lily's daughter's DNA. I simply think that the mermaid, helped Lily conceive, because she was a "goddess of fertility", so the child was conceived thanks to the Queen Mermaids powers.

I HOPE THIS IS THE FIRST OF MANY WITHIN THESE CHRONICLES!!

Does anyone know if this was made for cable, or for the big sceen?

I haven't watched the movie in a few years, but I remember the scene in which the mermaid speaks quite well. Prior to that, no one was sure if the mermaid was intelligent or simply a beast with human features. When she spoke the name "Angus," she was demonstrating not only her intelligence and adaptibility but the fact that she knew where she was, what was happening, and WHO had imprisoned and basically enslaved her. Lilly immediately and correctly interprets this as a threat to her man and warns (or pleads with) the creature to leave him alone. this is the turning point in the movie, when the creature's malign intelligence and manipulative power become clearly evident, and the point at which Lilly realizes things are inexorably heading towards a bad end.

It's been years since I watched this movie...but what I thought the end had alluded to was that Lily was part mermaid, that is why she had the connection with the mermaid from the start. I thought that was why the child's eyes flashed at the end. I need to watch it again.

I don't think Lily went to kill her. She was afraid and wanted her gone, but I think her solution was to free her, not harm her. Maybe she knew the mermaid was the reason she got pregnant and was grateful?

Well it's more than ten years since the original OP but it seems like people check into movies and their boards over the years.

As for #3, providing food for the mermaids, I would assume that they all actually ate something else from the sea, this wasn't their sole source of food. In captivity we hear she was fed two people but there could have been more, fish, sea weeds. You'd think it would be in the diary, who knows. She may have resisted any offers knowing she would feed soon anyway.
