So everyone keeps saying that they need to find their luck back before "its too late". What exactly was going to happen to their luck if they didn't get it back? It would seem as though they would be lepreachuns forever but I never understood that very well.

They may have been thinking that if they all shrank that they wouldn't be able to get it back since whoever had it would be big. Can't say for sure but it is a plot device. You say something like "before it's too late" to have a danger element of the plot so that the audience, in turn, can feel some anxiety about the predicament. If there is no danger then the audience doesn't get invested in the story.
