Kitty and Laura's relationship?

From Laura's dialogue it almost seems like they barely knew each other. Is there something missing? Also, do you think she made it through the surgery? I have the feeling she may have died.

Since I am a gay dude, I really want to know if the scene would have played out the same if they were both men

Probably not. 10 years later I realize that tHE hOURS is full of sexist clichés.

I think Laura was supposed to be in love with Kitty, but Kitty just saw her as a friend/neighbor. She seemed completely unaware of Laura's feelings for her.
