Israeli Soldiers Bomb Cinema Showing Divine Intervention

When Elia Suleiman brought his film Divine Intervention to Ramallah he found the Israeli soldiers had got there first. The entrance to the cinema had been bombed, the cash till rifled, the Dolby stereo stolen. Storming the adjacent "house of culture", the soldiers proceeded to gun down a row of costumed mannequins and shoot holes in a canvas that hung on the wall. "They executed a painting," Suleiman says, before dissolving into giggles. "I thought that was so funny. I mean, it's depressing when you're there. I was in Ramallah only yesterday and I was completely devastated. But we all have our own mechanism to lift us up again. Yesterday was a nightmare. Today I'm laughing."

Wow, I want to hear more, can you give me an article talking about this?

reply

yeah, i'd like to see an article about it also, preferably from a reputable news source, considering i follow the news really closely and never heard a thing about this.

reply

It depends how reputable you think the Guardian is - but hey..

reply

I think the Guardian is willing to believe any complaint against Israel without further evidence. I just saw this movie on an Israeli cable TV channel.

reply

let me guess..you support israel that (even tough 100 years there was no israel and only palestine) palestine should not be independent

reply

There was no 'Palestine' either until they stole the land from Syria and surrounding countries.

reply

even so they still didnt had any israel over there...god damn..there never was a place for jeweish people until da british decided diferently(2 have technical support in important region, even more important nowdays)...da real prob is that israel was created/mantained with da inconditional support of da big empires of its time (first britain, and now americans), and that took da balance of a local affair(and you wonder why aplestine joined forces with other countries 2 defeat palestine...and britain & USA..not officialy these last 2 that is)...plus its already bad that a empire stepped in da local situation taking da freedom of palestine people(or as Churchil said in speech "colonazing them as da spanish, americans and da portuguese did with da indians"), but its even worse when every year israel invaders ENTER palestine soil and "colonize" it by stealing that same soil from palestine people or killing palestine people and blowing their houses cuz "they were looking for terrorits"...i guess im saying its kinda dificult 4 you and me not 2 understand da palestine people and why they do what they do...

Did you ever graduate past grade three? Your english is equivalent to an 8 year old.

reply

hey man, if you have a problem with my english choose another language we may speak

reply

Actually, I think his/her problem was with your use of 'da' instead of 'the', '2' instead of 'to' etc, as well as, most likely, the many spelling and grammatical errors.

There is no need to insult or perpetuate your racist views on the Palestinians as a "neanderthal group". I do agree however that the complex story of the Palestinians and Israelis cannot be appropriately summarized in the message boards of IMDB (nor should it be as it is not relevant).

Apparently, Keff, you too have never been to the region either (at least post-Oslo), since Palestinian-Arabs cannot "wander around worry free" as you state. Technically Jews are allowed into the West Bank and Gaza, though they choose not usually due to advice from the IDF soldiers at the checkpoints, fear for their own safety, or Jewish-only roads that interconnect various settlements, negating the need to enter Palestinian controlled areas.

However back to the original post by JoshStein - if you click the link given, it does in fact refer to a Guardian UK article about Josh's original post, which is what the topic at hand should be.

Let us leave the Israeli/Arab debate to forums elsewhere.

You complain about being humiliated by Israelis doing a body search at the airport, well my friend, THEY WERE SEARCHING FOR WEAPONS AS AN ANTI-TERRORIST PRECAUTION SO BLAME THE MUSLEMS NOT THE JEWS! If the Palestinians were not committing constant acts of terrorism then there would be no need to search you!

Most people go there without being searched, perhaps you mentioned your anti-semitic views to the security there and raised a red flag...

You said "if the Israeli's went ONE DAY without their damn tanks and machinery, they all would be toppled over in a heartbeat."

So would America, Canada or any other country. Brilliant concept, remove the defenses and then the country would be helpless! Remove the guns from police officers and the criminals will not be so "helpless"... In fact, why not remove the door locks from your home and then be surprised when you get robbed!

You said "Jews went running around in Asia and Europe...as they were not welcomed ANYWHERE"

Actually, Jews lived peacefully in the Muslem countries until about 100 years ago, some countries like Iran had peaceful co-existance until some 25 years ago after the fall of the Shah and the demise of the countries' democracy. You really have no knowledge of history or politics what-so-ever, you are however fueled by anti-semitism so for the life of me I do not know why you wanted to go to Israel.

There were exactly two incidents in the entire history of statehood where an Israeli went crazy and sunk to the level of Arab terrorism, their acts were condemned universally. On the other hand, as of last years count, there were more Israeli terror victims than people who died in the 9/11 WTC attacks- yet another Muslem terrorist act. The Arab terror attacks, both the Israeli suicidal homicide bombings and the Twin Towers, were called martyrdom by Arab officials, pretty screwed up, huh?

You claim to have seen the atrocities committed by the Israeli's firsthand, I have been there, spent quite a lot of time in the Arab sections and hot spots, never seen nothing except two bomb scares where the IDF needed to close off the street, risking their own lives to potentially de-detonate the possible bomb and so little girl, I don't buy your story.

To exacerbate my disbelief in your experiences you claim to "educate" yourself via the opinions of your teachers and what you see on TV?! Are you watching Al Jazera or are you just that naive?!! You say that you have been there, then you should be quite aware that the news does not capture things accurately at all and that your teachers may have their own opinions as well.

Israel has far fewer UN violations than the Arabs who have yet to keep even one of the many peace agreements made but yet they keep the "gifts" such as freeing Arab terrorist criminals, something that would be an absurd concept anywhere else in the world.

The wall would not be needed if the terrorism actually stopped. On the contrary, it affectively increased right after the last peace agreement. Despite the wall, the Palestinians you love so much have figured out that Kassam rockets can be fired over the wall into random residential zones. When a Jailed felon starts throwing things at the guards through the prison bars do you dare ask why the bars are needed???

Your views are based on Jews=Good and Muslim=bad which is oversimplistic and faulty. Israel was founded on the ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people, that is the greatest crime and terrorism of all and for last 40 years Israel has kept the Palestinians oppressed throught the force of violence. You dont see this because you follow simplistic views that satisfy your emotional needs.

It is the occupation which is the root cause of terrorism, end the occupation and the terrorism will end. The occupation is based upon violence, if you condemn the Arabs for violence, you should condemn the Israelis more because everything they do is based on violence.

I have noticed Israelis trying to turn the tables and accuse the Palestinians from coming out of nowhere. That is a trick which only works on ignorant Americans. Get a map of pre-1948 and u will see clearly the words PALESTINE written on what is now Israel and the occupied territories. When the Jews were fleeing Europe, they did not go to an "Arab land". They specifically moved to PALESTINE which was under British occupation. It is Israel which is the foreign entity in the Middle East and was built on the theft of Palestinian land and the destruction of Palestinian culture. The Palestinians are the natives.

you mentioned the words terror/terrorism 8 times in you replies, lemmi take a wild guess here, you went to the same high school George.W.Bush went to?
just one question, under what rock have you been living? and when was the last time you watched the news?
lets talk numbers shall we? the israeli casulties are 999 (according to the israeli ministry of foreign affairs) from 2000 till 2006, on the other hand the palestanian casulties is 18.877, thats about 19 times more, 19.
those 18877 included 5409 kid under the age of 15, of those 5409, 3919 were under the age of 10, 1047 under the age of 5, 261 under the age of 1, 74 still-births. in my humble dictionary thats called an extermination.

http://www.aljazeera.net/News/archive/archive?ArchiveId=77389

this is one of the worst palestanian terrorists the israeli ever hunted down. shes only 5 years old but dont let that fool you, she is as dangerous as you can imagine. she was shot in the head twice on her 5th birthday by israeli soldiers while she was crossing the road to buy some candy. the israeli army said they will investigate the case, that was in 2004..the link is in arabic but you can transelate it anywhere.

so please dont give us that israeli-gotta-do-what-they-gotta-do-to-protect-themselves who*esh*t, nobody buys that anymore. everyone knows israel occupied palestine. occupation leads to resistence, history taught us that a thousand times. but to most Americans that doesnt mean s**t, they just love the idea of stealing a land from its native occupiers and then hunt them down, sounds familier?
thank you so much, now you can go back to your cage, and when we want your monkey-brained opinion we will toss a banana.

The Arabs are no more the original natives of Palestine than Paris Hilton is an authentic Parisian. The name Palestine was invented by the Romans, to replace the name Judea after the Jewish population unsuccessfully challenged Roman authority. The Jews had been there since the time of Abraham, Moses, or Solomon depending on how far back you believe the Bible. Certainly they were there to fight the Romans, who destroyed the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem in the year 70. The Arabs came along only centuries later, and they never considered Palestine to be a separate nation. All the institutions that proudly called themselves Palestinian while the British were ruling there in the early 20th century-- the Palestinian Electric Company, the Palestinian Philharmonic Orchestra, etc.-- were Jewish institutions. The Arabs were busy denying that Palestine had any distinct history, in order to claim it as part of the great indivisible Arab world. Although scattered around the world by circumstance, the Jewish people never completely left Palestine, and the Jews are the only nation that ever considered Palestine to be its center. Wherever they reside, Jews have always turned toward Jerusalem to pray. Muslims go up to the mosque that they built on the site of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, and from there they pray to Mecca. It was only when the Arabs noticed that Westerners tend to favor the underdog and to believe nations have the right to self-determination that the Arabs began to wail, "The underdog is the Palestinian Arab people, who are denied their self-determination by the Jews." There never was a Palestinian Arab people, there never was an independent Palestinian state, and there is no distinct Palestinian Arab history of interest apart from a hundred years of terrorism.

The media, is the "cold war" now-a-days. You might disagree, but in realty, they are the ones who transform a snow ball into an avalanche. ON ALL SIDES, it's fueling hate, both for Palestinian supporters and for Israeli supporters. Only thing I can tell you, is this, not a single sane Palestinian who lives in Gaza strip and works on the other side of the fence, would support the Muslim extremists. For a very simple reason, even tho the minimum wage salary he's making on that side of the fence, is WAY above minimal wage, compared to the one on other side (Gaza strip) of the land. The only reason for which we all see little kids, mothers with babies and elderly Palestinian people die, when ever the IDF attacks, has to do with the fact that extremist don't give a *beep* about these human beings, it's in their interest to show dead bodies to the different medias of the world. So that people all over the world see something completely different, than what reality is.

Why would you use a school to bombard Israel? So that when the IDF takes you out, the world would see the destruction of a "peaceful" place....
