Joy Division

I felt the weakest part of this film was the depiction of Joy Division, I felt Control was a much better depiction of them, however can anyone say different, was Ian Curtis really like what he was like in this film? Or more like the more timid character in Control, to my knowledge he was more like he was in Control, but did have a bit of a dark side to him (I heard a story of him threatening to kill someone at the Battle of the Bands depicted in this film because they didn't want to play last, or something to this effect), However I really enjoyed the film overall, quite tongue in cheek, Was the Hacienda the actual Hacienda? If not it was really good, looked exactly like it (I know stock footage of the real Hacienda was used at certain times just as real footage was spliced with film footage)

One of my mates sisters managed to blag her way into the crowd for the 'rebuilt' Hac during filming. By all accounts (and with much jealousy on our part), the mock up was EXACTLY the same as the real Fac51. They did a one night only event after filming for the people who were the crowd for the filming and her reprots were that they had even managed to get the same cavernous sound of the Hac.

From my own memories of the place, I certainly can't see any differences from the mock up they used for the film and what I remember of the real place. It was very strange seeing it once again, knowing that it was no more.

If anyone else is local to Manc, may I recommend Hooky's new venture, Fac251 on Princess Street in the old Factory Offices...it's amazing!!! Don't be expecting a continuation of The Hacienda though...this is a more grown up affair. I guess Hooky doesn't want to make the same mistakes again! A great venue though never the less and true to it's Madchester roots.

I do not like the depictions of Joy Division either. They made Ian Curtis seem like a huge prick. Sure, he was agressive, but not all the time!

The lads from New Order have said on several occasions that Control was by far the more "real" portrayal of the band and of Curtis, made by someone who knew them at the time.

I knew Ian Curtis and although I loved both films, I thought Control was probably nearer the truth, if there was a truth.

Two things; Ian had, in my opinion had an alienating effect on an audience which the young man in the film didn't have. Ian was always a stranger and that wasn't just down to he music.

The other point is that apart from the basics there is/was no truth about Ian. His reality was skewed and his story varied from day to day. You could either go with it or get away but he certainly wasn't a person it was easy to get to know.

LeeAnn Rimes. No it doesn't.
