Such a cool film

I Loved this film so much! This was my favorite film I've seen recently. Brilliant film and performances. The honesty, emotion and realism of this film just made me so happy this film was made. I felt for the characters and the story was very simple, yet still very entertaining. The actors were excellent, especially Vincent Cassel who was absolutley perfect. I felt as if I was getting to see into these people's lives, warts and all, ike a fly on the wall. I love it when films make me feel that way! I fell in love with Vincent Cassel, not so much for his looks but for the emotions he portrayed through his performance. I also thought it was a cool change from the ordinary to see the love scene at the end, right before credits rolled, instead of like most films in the beginning or middle. Such a cool film.

Absolutely!! This is one of Vincent's better films along with Le haine, and both he and Emmanuelle Devos were nominated for Cesars, although only Emmanuelle won.

Don't forget The Apartment.

I liked the film, too, but I didn't understand the deal with the parole officer and his wife. What was up with that?

reply

Haha, you know honestly I couldn't tell you.
And most people you ask can't tell you either.
Was he telling Paul and Carla to love each other because he and his wife weren't able to? Or were some scene's cut and that's why I have no idea what the hell was going on with that subplot. Anyways

"All I ask for is the opportunity to prove that money can't buy me happiness"

reply

isn't it to justify the fact that the parole officer doesn't bother paul with questions and meetings anymore ? this little plot seems to have no other purpose than to drag the cop away from his job concerns, hence giving paul the freedom he needs for his scam.

reply

Yes, the parole officer's only purpose is to provide Paul and Carla with the extra bit of luck or happenstance that they needed to pull through, showing that their plan, although very clever, was an extreme gamble that would decide their fate ("ça passe ou ça casse", we say in french).

Oh and I agree, this film is wicked cool.

i really liked it too. i thought vincent cassell was excellant as was the girl. other films i've seen cassell in he's played more cocky characters of some variation. in this film he's by no means timid but socially akward at times around ordinary working people cause of years as a criminal. the last half hour of the film was much more tense and suspenseful then i was expecting.

reply

Apparently, this movie is an adaptation from a book. Does anyone out there read the book? Maybe this can explain why the parole officer and his wife subplot is completely loose. I still can't say I enjoyed this movie with such dispensable subplot. Besides technical details this movie doesn't explore new ideas and a lot of sequences 'just happen' by chance.

reply

The parole officer scenes were indeed strange. It's as if the relevant parts of the plot involving the parole officer were cut out of the film, yet they left in the parts we saw. No doubt about it, in my opinion, the parole officer killed his wife. But what was the purpose of this in the film?

Excellent film, other than the confusing plot points involving the parole officer.

The DVD has deleted scenes, unfortunately without English subtitles. One is entitled "Masson's Confession", and there is another alternate ending in which Masson meets with Paul, Paul give him the plane ticket, and we later see Mason on a plane (running from the law, I suppose)

reply

I thought it was to highlight the Rear Window homage.

Loved this movie - and very Hitchcock with the later scenes in the apartment. It doesn't get better than this. The performances by Devos and Cassel - just amazing.
