I really like this film, and Devos is a very talented actress... but I agree with you that she's not ugly AT ALL. So when people mentioned how unattractive she was, it would be more believable.

shareI don't think she was meant to be "ugly" necessarily; just unattractive (there is a difference). Her frumpy/plain appearance, awkwardness and isolation is what made her unattractive.
shareThe character is not supposed to be ugly, she's an average looking woman that could look very sexy and attractive but her problem that prevents her from doing that is that she has a low self-esteem because of her hearing condition, she is the one who thinks she's not good enough...
