'Quiet as a church'

This movie basically sucks but it is enjoyable to watch at the same time. Given who was in it, it had tremendous potential to be a "real" movie. Walken, Palminteri, Steiger, all greats.

The problem is the actors who played Danny and his little brother. They tried to come off like these street smart guys and it was hilarious to watch. The affectation they put into their speech wasn't working. That "quiet as a church" line was used 3 times and it fell flat every time, even when Palminteri delivered it.

If they had better dialog and better actors for the young guys this could have been a good movie. As it is, it is still a classic because of how stupid it is. If they wanted to keep it lower budget, Ryan Gosling would have been available cheap back then. Or maybe Scott Caan.

That line comes from The Hustler:

Charlie: It's quiet.
Eddie: Yeah, like a church. Church of the Good Hustler.

Your theory is that Scott Caan would have made this movie better?. Huh...

LMMFAO!! Scott Caan or Ryan Gosling would've ruined this movie, it's perfect the way it is with who they picked. This is a guilty pleasure movie of mine, I don't see how anybody COULDN'T like it but there are a lot of dim people in the world so I guess I can see why. The dialog that's in this movie that makes it great. What did you want? Chick flick dialog???
